When I was a kid, it didn't matter what you were actually drinking, it was called a coke. The exception was the Nehi products. They were called "Big Orange" or whatever flavor they were.

We also had some stuff that I guess, is gone now. Grapette, "Something" Cola, Mr. Pibb, Chocola and some others.

A small, plastic sack of salted peanuts is just about the right amount for a 12-oz coke. The larger bag is too many. Takes some pratice to get them all in the bottle without spilling any in your crotch.

Another thing we use to do is ride our bikes or horses a mile to the local A&W and get a nickel, frosty mug of root beer. The big thing use tobe to steal an A&W mug.

bowriter,
I remember all the stuff you stated, in the above post. I guess that's one good thing about getting old, is the memories.

When my Granddaddy and I used to stop by the old country store on our way back from fishing, we would always get a "drink" (or coke) out of the old chest drink box. Some of them were coin operated, where you slid the drink around and then lifted it out.

Next, was the peanuts.

Nothing like going to a restaurant and the waitress asking "whut kinda coke you'all want, a Sprite or whut?

Great song-and God do I remember those days! We had a large home construction company down the road from us growing up. A few of us kids would invade those 4-5 acres one weekend a month or so and get us $5-10 pocket money each off of the pop bottles!

I did some growing up in Savannah, GA.

they still had chain gangs of prisoners back then. The chain gangs were made to labor along the highways with shovels cleaning the mud out of ditches.

they would pitch all the sand, silt, pine needles, bottles and cans over to the weeds.

I would come through the next day and scarf up the returnable bottles. I was probably 6 or 7 years old. Momma had no idea I was 2 and 3 miles from the house. \:D

I remember way back when in Columbia, walking up to John Thomas Grocery and buying a cold Double Cola for 6 cents and a bag of peanuts for a nickel. Had to take a few sips of the cola so you'd could get all the peanuts in.

Also, Mr. Thomas wouldn't let you leave the store with your concoction unless you paid, up front, the 3 cent deposit on the bottle.
