My daughter has been competing in taekwondo tournaments for 2 years now and is the talk of the nation. After receiving her balck belt in April and competing at Worlds (largest tournament of the year) where she won first in forms, 2nd in sparring, 3rd in weapons against 15 girls all across the country, she said I'm done.

The talk going around she will be the next World Champion with some what ease, but she doesn't care. We / instrustors / masters have talked to her trying to get her to understand what the best in the world means, but she doesn't care about it. Thought long and hard about forcing her to complete this year but just not going to force her.In her 70 something tournments competing in 4 to 5 events at each tournament, she has won first 51 times, around 40 2nd palces

Very sad for her as I know later in life she will regret not trying

It happens to a lot of young people. They reach a point where they wonder if what they are doing is worth the cost. She will find something else to take its place.

Hm. I agree with not forcing her. It will only make her resent it. I do hope she will at least keep working and training if she does decide to stop competing. The health benefits alone are worth it.

Probably tired of missing hanging out with friends, etc. Plus, it sounds like it was too easy for her.

Had a similar experience with my youngest son and baseball. He started as a sophomore on the varsity team, had 2nd highest batting average for the season. Now this was on a very good team. Had colleges already following him and would have no doubt been offered a scholarship. Missed most of his junior year with an injury. Decided to not play his senior year. I was heartbroken, he had played travel ball since 8yrs old. It was tough to do but I couldn't force him to play and be miserable. He did stick with football for what it's worth. At some point you gotta let them make the decisions and live with the consequences.

One of my best friends daughter got her first degree black belt at 8 years old.

Then she continued progressing for the next 5 years.
Then she came home from TEACHING one of her classes one day and said I am done.

She never gave a reason and the REALLY odd part was her instructor / master / whatever never said a word to her parents about her quitting.
Strange.

I know you hate it and I hate to hear it too but I definately would not force her to compete.

Not aimed at you, but I think playing a sport year round sucks the fun out of it for the kids. And we start them younger and younger. I did it with my oldest daughter and softball.

Us as parents can see it from our own experiences.... My dad can tell one on me when I was having my school paid for, in the starting rotation, and walked away..... The point is that all kids go through this and we have to let them live and learn......

We can't force our kids to do things that they are not happy with and sometimes they will surprise us and come full circle on their own.... \:\)

Good luck....
