I can't remember where I saw this or read it but the worlds first 150 year old person has already been born. I was talking about it with some friends and it's still on my mind.

We all know several people live to be over 100 every year and more are living that long all the time. With all the modern medical stuff we have today and that's in the pipeline 100 year old people will become more common.

But they warned us that does not mean we will soon be watching the Super Bowl played by 75 year old pro football players. Our bodies will only take so much, at 75 we will still be old and have limits. That is the kicker here. Just think a minute. YOU reach your 75th birthday and by the time your 80 or 90 you will be in a nursing home where you will SPEND THE NEXT 70 OR 60 YEARS.

I can't seem to get that out of my head. To me that would be horrible to spend 70 years in a nursing home just being kept alive. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to die and don't want anybody else to but we all will someday. Still there should be limits. Think about the worlds population if this became commopn. There are limits on how much food we can grow, how much oil we can get, how much engery, etc, etc. The world cannot support that. It's been said that today, right now, there are more people alive walking the earth than all the people that have lived and dided before us, all the way back to Adam and Eve. To double that population would wipe it all out.

Great point. From a personal standpoint, many of my family and friends have been tired from their illness and were ready to die.

However cold that may sound, I respect it.

Wildcat, the article that made that prediction also predicated it on revolutionary advancements in health care that make it possible for the body to continually heal itself and therefore indefinately postpone old age. It also said that somebody will be born within 30 years that will live to be 1000. I call BS.

But then that revolutionary medical study was revealed this week that had doctors harvesting stem cells from patients and successfully using them to heal heart problems.

I'm not sure about 150. The body is designed - yes I say created - to last up to about 120 years when taken care & a healthy lifestyle lived. Them viennie's sausages sure taste good to some, especially with hot sauce, but they aren't exactly nutritionally redeeming. \:D

Jack LaLanne, about the healthiest guy I know of, made it to 96 before he died of complications from pneumonia. My mom made it to 78 before she died of the same thing. Mom had been in serious decline for several years & had been mostly homebound for 10 years. When Jack Lalanne was 94 still exercising twice per day & swimming daily. Jack Lalanne didn't make it to 120, but he lived - truly lived - up until the day he died. Bless her heart, mom's quality of life was not that high.

I would not want to be kept alive, just respirating. If I had no chance of coming back, I would not want to be kept alive.

When mom was on the respirator & it was apparent she was not getting better, I talked with her about what she wanted to do. It was possible that she would breathe on her own but not likely. I asked her if she wanted the tube to stay out & she was clear she wanted it to stay out. Never done anything so emotionally tough. It would be great if everyone would have a talk with those who are close to them & would make decisions if you can't so they will know your wishes. It would be best to have a legal living will & durable power of attorney.

You got it right - one can't say when it will be his or her time. The healthiest person in the world could get hit by a meteor. Since we don't know, it's best to live as much life as possible while you're alive.

Everyone needs a living will to specify what is to be done when you are down and quality of life is gone or diminishing.
