So does it have a purpose or just a hobby? If that ? Sounds offensive not meant to I really don't know.
For some it is just a hobby, for others it has a very significant purpose. Ham radio is used much more than I ever realized. Ham radio operators do everything from assisting the U.S. military call home from ships and aircraft to reporting local weather conditions to the National Weather Service. Ham's also deploy during Disasters like Katrina and the recent Tornadoes to help Police and EMS with communication when cell phones and landlines are down for days or possibly weeks. I am sure there is much more but I just got started in this.

Yep. For most of us it's a hobby, but there are some "purposeful" aspects about it. Bigorange hit the main ones. With the popularity of satellites, sat phones, and the internet, the need for much of it is on the decline, but it's still there as a last resort that'll always work, regardless of what type of catastrophe occurs.

My grandpa used to be one....got his license back in WWII in the Army Signal Corps.
I remember it was the original "chat room" before chat rooms were cool.
