Just start paying attention to the commercial mowers that you pass all day long on the street. Then go buy the brand you see the most of them using. As far as keeping them running good, use 100% 93 octane gas, ethanol gas will dry up the seals and gaskets in your carb, and some good synthic 2 cycle oil and you should be fine.
I myself use to have a Echo trimmer, and it was a machine. Three back surgeries later, I spray round up where I use to trim and dont worry about it anymore. lol
Also, I was told, by a certified small engine mechanic, to not leave gas in the tank and carb when storing the trimmer for long periods of time. He said that during the winter he recommended spraying some WD-40 in the tank and priming the carb with it. Said it would keep the seals lubed during the winter.

I bought an Efco, straight shaft weedeater about 4 years ago and love it. Never had any trouble. Don't use cheap gas in any small engine since its made of corn and everything now. Storing in the winter, run it till all the gas runs out. Saves the carburator.

I would highly recommend Red Max I have been using them for 11 years . I take the gaurd off so I can get my line out there which is rough on the motor still they run like a charm. Just bought one the other day its new Red Max (max torque)they changed the gear ratio in the head and you can run the line 12 inches on both sides and it won't bogg down a bit, and it won't burn your motor up because of the different gear ratio. After being in the lawn care buss. for 11 years now I will have to say I am impressed with this trimmer.

I run a Echo 280T and a Stihl KM110R. The Echo is a monster. Ive had this one since last October. It replaced one that had around 200 hours or one and a half years of age. Im afraid that I probly had a hand in its demise. I was running .105 size line(too big IMO) and was not using one of the additives to displace ethanol. Started running bad last September. Took it to the shop and they said it was shot. They blamed it on Ethanol. I only use good oil(Stihl). But the trimmer was used hard. I wont use it every day, but when it gets used, were liable to put 6 to 8 hours on it at a time. Like I said earlier, the last one only lasted a year +, but how many folks will put 200 hours on one in a year. And when it quit. I did buy another one.
The Stihl is only about 1.5 months old. It seems to be a good trimmer, but only time will tell. It does not run as smooth as the Echo does though.
I am only running .95 line in both of them now. And use the fuel additive religiously. Hopefully they wont have to work as hard and may last longer. We'll see.

If you're having problems with a Stihl... check your spark arrestor. Look at where your exhaust comes out of it. There is a thin metal fabric sheet that gets clogged with oil and soot... the machine will usually idle fine but not reach high rpm.
What model do you have?

There's a good chance that what it is... I just took those screens out of mine. One I was having trouble with... wouldn't go to full RPM. Now it runs like new again.

I run Dolmars now. Great machines. Light weight. Echoe's are a good trimmer as well.
