Golden Retrievers are also great dogs, very smart, great with kids and protective. I would say as a family dog they are better than a lab. JMO

Another Lab but they are not as well at the protective part, a GREAT family dog is a Golden you can't go wrong with a Golden, always in a good mood. German Shepard is a great dog too Smart Loving but also very big and will DEMAND time to train!

Boxers are family dogs but life span usually is around 10 years I see some at work that are 15 and still doing well. Mine lets out a mean bark when he don't know who pulls in the drive.

for outside - lab or golden. boxers are too hyper for me, kinda like an oversized jack russel. inside - golden doodle or laberdoodle.

sorry for your loss......
here's a thought. if there is an animal shelter nearby or within driving distance, call them and see what they have.
I have owned pure bred boxers (three), a German Sheperd, a St.Benard, two Dalmatians, two Yellow Labs and a variety of mixed breeds.
I got out of the stage of needing to own PURE breeds and could not be more pleased with the dogs I have gotten from the shelter. I grew out of the need to brag about owning a pure breed or champion dog and the prestige that I thought it brought. Not saying anyone else here is like that. i am only talking from personal experience.
Depending on the mix, you can some times get the best of two or more breeds. All of my mixed breeds were very smart and gentle, but would bark at strangers until they got to know them.
I have not paid for a dog in years, except for the adoption fee and vet bills. Those vet bills seem to come quite regularly , no matter what breed you have..lol.
Just another suggestion, take it for what it's worth.
Never let someone else tell you what to get. A dog should always be a personal choice.
Sit down with the family and decide...OR maybe take them all to the shelter and see which dog shows the family the most love .....
good luck....
Mine is a Jail House refugee.... a great family member.

Our pyrenese is calming down and sticking around the house more. She's definitely gotten protective, but obedience isn't her thing (which is common with that breed).
I wish I could fix her rearranging and nighttime barking tendencies.

the only dog I will have is boxer but that just my preference good with kids great home protector and very loving Can't argue with any of that, but the one my cousin has slings his head around in the house and big strings of drool fling onto the walls. Maybe it's just him and not the breed. hmm mine dosent unless she sees a big steak then she drewls something awful lol

Whatever breed you decide on, get a rescue... there are many good dogs out there looking for homes.
Protective, good with kids, trainable... I'd recommend a coonhound, had a blue tick/Walker cross once that was great on all three of those. We do rescue work with golden retrievers now, they're too nice to be home protectors though.
