I usually don't go ranting about my personnal life, but I need to vent!
I'll start by saying that I love my wife to death and want her to be happy, happy with her job, our marriage, and our family.
Now on to the reason for me to post this thing....I've worked my butt off since I got out of high school. I put myself through technical school while working a full time job not only before we got married, but for a year or so after we got hitched and had bought our first house. My wife also went back to school and got her RN degree after we got married. The best route for her was to bite the bullet and go back full time which meant she would have to quite work to focus on school. I had no problem with that since "she would be making pretty good money when she got out". I had bought a nice truck when I got my new job after I graduated, but didn't want to make the payments after she quit work while in school so I sacrificed and got rid of it. Anyway, I scrapped and saved and somehow we got her through school with no debt on just my income. It was tough, but I saw the light as I knew when she got out we'd be "sitting pretty". Well, she graduated in May 09' with her Associate Degree in Nursing, got her RN license, and then we had our first child that fall . I knew that I'd have to sacrifice even more of my "wants" for my family now and gladly done so. It sucked, but I even sold my boat and 4-wheeler to get rid of some car debt since she would be out of work for another extended period of time. Now my little boy is in day-care full time, my wife still only works part time, he!! sometimes only 10 hrs or so a week, and I'm still working my tail off and am unable to enjoy/spend a dime of what I make on anything I "want" because I'm still basically the only income in our household. We are making it alright, but at this point we're only "making it" and nothing more. I'm alright with livin on love, but I didn't sacrifice several years of school for myself and even more for my wife to go back and get a degree for us to just "make it". I guess I'm ready to start seeing our educations pay off rather than just getting by and it's kinda getting to me lately......Sorry to depress anyone who may read this
Before anyone tells me to "put my foot down" save your breathe. I've already been down that road with many "heated" discussions, and it ain't workin.

I certainly don't have the answer as I had similar issues in my marriage. She wanted to do everything she thought everyone else was doing but didn't want to do this or that for a paycheck. After losing out on the $350k to $450k she would have made if working during the time period she didn't work, we split. She's someone else's problem now and I couldn't be happier. You two are going to have to work it out as it fits your relationship. Good luck.

Sure can. A lot of the RN's around here only have an Associates. Funny thing is that a RN with an Associates degree makes the same money as one with a BS in most, if not all cases. The BS is basically paving the way to something bigger like a nurse anesthetist, or practitioner. To go 4 years only to become an RN from a salary standpoint is useless. The material covered is essentially the same just with more emphasis and more time to learn it from what I understand. I could be wrong.

My wife hasn't worked a public job in many, many years. We chose do have it that way. I wanted my child to be raised by her mother and I. Our daughter hasn't spent one minute in daycare. I also didn't want my wife to have to deal with all the pressure of the work place. It has been tough financially through the years, but we have made it with God's help. I wouldn't trade it for any other lifestyle. I'm just saying, there could be a lot of good come out of her not working on the job so much at this point in your life. Life is not all about money and toys. I hope you two can work it out. Please take this in the spirit it is intended. I am not being judgemental nor a smart alec. I just hope you can make the most important things, the most important things.

I wonder if my little sis completely understood this. She bowed out halfway through her pursuit and switched majors altogether. She was on the BS-N path to RN.

I hear ya brother! I hear ya!
Mine got her BS in Animal Science after following the advice of her teachers/advisors of all the job opportunities in that particular field. That is the whole reason she went down that road! I just have a HS education but have a pretty good job considering that. Even still, this will be the first year I clear $40k a year on my own...which ain't a whole heck of a lot. My wife on the other hand, after she graduated...guess what! All those jobs her degree was suppose to open the door to, suddenly disappeared. She now works at a local feed store barely making min wage. And I will tell you this: I paid for our house cash, and we've never had a house payment. I bought a used truck and we paid it off quick. And if it had just been me working on my own, we would have NEVER made it. We would be so far in the hole we would never get out. And that's just from the things that have came up over the yrs!

pastorbmp, I appreciate and agree with your response. I'm a Christian man and believe me I've prayed and prayed and will continue doing so. I just haven't really talked to anyone about it. I've actually told my wife that if she's only going to work part time we should just take our little boy out of daycare and she can be a stay-at-home mom. I think she wants to work she's just being sooooo picky about what she wants to do that I'm afraid she's not going to find a job to suit her in the near future.
We know that her working night shifts don't work with her OR me FOR SURE!

it's tough, unless one spouse is making $35K or more, I don't see how you can do it. And then, that's the bare minimum. Both have to work, to stay ahead. Unless you take a vow of poverty.
This ain't Leave it Beaver days anymore. Daycare is a trap too. I know of a co-worker, spends almost $1000 bucks a month for two kids. Almost ain't worth it.
Short of loving, generous grandparents-I don't know how others cope.
we didn't do the daycare thing until the kids were in the 3-7 years time frame and then, they were kept by trusted small in-home daycare run by folks we know from church. My mother-in-law kept ours while they were in diapers.

I hear ya! Thank God, and I do mean THANK YOU LORD, that when we built our house I made sure that we took out a loan that was going to be small enough that if one of us lost our job (at the time) the other could still keep the lights on and make the payments. The bank said we could have 130k, and we took out 80k. At the time I made like $12/hr and she was making about $13. If we had done like a lot of others my age and bought that big fancy house we'd be up the creek without a paddle right now!

That would be SOOOO awesome if we had family or friends that could/would do that! We're shelling out $90/wk for ours to stay at day care. They're friends, but they're also a business so we pay just like everyone else does.

This was the choice my wife I made as well - 30 years ago - and - we are 'just now' getting around to the 'I want's' in our life - and it much sweeter I must say -
There were times I went to work at 6 am - worked one job until 4pm then quick went to my 'second' job until Midnight or 1am - so we could have 'mom at home' it was hard man - it was really hard - but it was what we wanted for 'our' family -
It will pay off - but you have to be on the same page -
Pray, together, on it - and it will be ok -
ferg....

I'll probably make someone upset, but the post doesn't depress me, but irritates me just a bit. Maybe you should have waited to get married if you still had "wants". We all have'em, but when you look at the big pic, you have your family, healthy I assume. You say your making it, which is more than a lot of others out there. I could probably say the same as you. I got married, wife turned around and went to grad school at Belmont. Put a small fortune down and still had to get a 20k student loan. From there on, two kids (plus their health insur cost), etc... There's a lot of us just getting by, but things could be a lot worse. Guess I just grew up old school. Haven't bought a gun (new/used)in 20+ yrs, maybe a piece or two of camo in the past 7 or 8, etc... B83, seems like you have it better than you think. Do like I did last year and take this hunting season off. I don't think there's many on here that could do that. I spend 5 days a week leaving the house for work before my kids wake up and one more getting them ready for church. That left me with one day a week to sleep in, fix'em something to eat and take it easy. Oh well, just had to vent myself.

Going through the same thing with my wife right now. We had a child in March and now she only wants to work 2-3 days a week. The problem is we discussed this way before she got pregnant and she agreed to keep working full time. Now she has changed her mind since the baby got here and we only have alot more bills to pay for.

jb3, It'll take a lot more than giving me your opinion to get me upset. If I was thin skinned I wouldn't have dared put this on a public forum, not TnDeer anyway
The depressed part was said sarcastically. I'm not looking for sympathy or a man-hug or anything, I'm just looking for input or similar stories from anyone else who may have been down this road too. It's just one of those little speed-bumps in life and I'm trying to work through it. I don't want to keep boring my buddies to death talking about it so I figured I'd see what some of the TnDeer community had to say.
BTW I agree with you that I probably have it better than I think. All of us on this side of the ground have it better than we think from time to time.
Thanks for the reply

Be thankfull for what you have and don't focus on negative things. Raising a family is a tough yet rewarding job and it requires a lot of patience as you will see. It's probably not as bad as it seems. I didn't know how spoiled I was until I had children. Now they are the ones who come first, but that's not to say that dad can't have his own time every now and then.

Not a problem. We've all been there at one time or another. My wife started grad school the week after our honeymoon. Got preg about 1/2 way through. And in the past 7 years it hasn't slowed down a bit. Every now and then I'll pop a cold one and sit on the patio and watch the kids chase the dog and watch the sun go down.

If she is only working 10 or so hours a week, why is your son in daycare? That definitely would not fly with me. Mine were in daycare fulltime because I worked full time but if I had a day off, my boys were with me. That is an unnecessary expense. You might have more momey if you pulled him from daycare and she just stayed home with him. Just my opinion. It will have to be worked out between you two but I do see your point.

Referring to the 10 hr/wk and daycare thing...She is PRN which basically means she works as needed. Therefore, one week she'll work 10 hrs, the next 20 hrs, the next 40 hrs, and the next 5 hrs. Lately it's been 10-15 hours/wk or less (last several months). If we could find a daycare that has a daily rate and didn't charge for a full week and worked around our schedule that would be great, but there aren't any of those convenient to us.

Our daycare is the same way. We have to pay for everyday of the week even if our child is not even there. I think that is the way most daycare places are these days. We had to pay the full price when my wife was going to school even though or child was not there 2 days a week. I did not like it but if we wanted our child to have a spot at the daycare we had to pay for the full week.

Is there a chance you wife could find another part time job like in a Doctor office to work on the day she is not working in her current job? It might not pay great but it might get her into a job down the road that will work better for both of you.

Well baxter here goes, and I dont mean to offend you, but this is the way I see it, and I have seen it many times before. There are too many people out there that think they deserve the perfect job, just because they have the degree. The fact is the people with the jobs they want started out by doing the jobs no one wanted. My mom and my sister are both RN's. Both of them have worked every type of job available to an RN, from night shift to doctor's offices to giving sponge baths and changing bed pans. NEITHER of them EVER had a problem finding a full time gig. My mom has retired, but my sister still works. the fact that she is willing to do whatever is available has opened up the cushy jobs, and she can now be selective. It sounds to me like she is not willing to "pay her dues" to work her way up the ladder. So what if she has to work night shift for awhile to make a good impression to get another shift. The sacrafice the two of you would make is nothing compared to what you have already made yourself. Besides, the differential for night shift would substantially raise your income. Heck you might even like it, my mom did it for 30 years. Tell her to get in there and get after it and the right job will come her way.
Remember too, the longer she waits the more competition there is for those jobs. The nursing program is one of the largest programs at almost all of Tennessee's community colleges.

No offense whatsoever. In fact, you're preaching to the choir. I've said those exact words to her (almost to the word). She's been a nurse (LPN) for a while, but she went back to get her RN so that she could make more and also to get that better job. As an LPN she worked the long shifts, and even as an RN she's worked quite a few night shifts earlier this year, and the shift differential IS AWESOME. If I was smart enough to be a nurse I'd ask for night shifts, work my 3 shifts, and get 4 days off every week! BUT she was miserable doing it. I tried the hard arse "get out there and do what you have to do" thing on her for a while, but that made things a little worse, which basically just made for a miserable household altogether for a while.
Thanks for the reply

Yikes. It seems you are in a pickle. I wish I had some sage words for you. I'm fortunate in my situation and I would never second-guess or criticize anyone's setup (unless it's family).
I had a coworker at my last job that was sort-of in the same situation except his wife had pretty bad depression and no self-confidence. Pretty much she was terrified of working. He couldn't see it but I could see it plain as day. It took him 4 years to figure it out - after they had to file for bankruptcy.
I pray you guys figure it out because more than anything, you need a strong marriage and things like this can wear at it.

Thanks green doe! I agree. We have a great relationship other than this area and unfortunately it's a BIG area. I never understood how people could let money ruin their relationships/lives, but I can see it plain as day nowadays. I'm not saying it's near that bad for us, but I don't want it to get that way and am trying to get it under better control. Personnal finances are a lot more stressful when you throw a child in the mix than I ever would have thought.

Baxter83, it could be worse.
My wife ran an in home day care in Texas (left TN in the early 80's as I could not give my labor away) while our kids (3) were young, full self employment tax (16%)for 20+ years. I worked construction and climbed the ladder to a better paying job as the years went on. When the youngest hit high school, the wife decided she had changed the last strangers baby's diaper, and went back to college,(she had always wanted to be a nurse). As the designated "Old Person" as she called herself, she had to go though the chemistry and such out there in her first year, then a job opening came up in TN, and we decided to move back, as her Father was getting on in years, and my parents were too. The change in schools from one state to the next caused her to take some extra courses, and being that she had been out of school so long, she did not burn up the hours, but stayed after it none the less.
Then the kidney disease jumped on her, and she finished the last year while pretty sick, so in all it took her 4 years to get her degree. She passed the Boards on the first try, but then her kidneys failed completely. She started dialysis, and that kicked her pretty bad. She tried to find a job here in Jackson, but nobody would hire a part timer who was as sick as she was.
Finally her disease got so bad, her Dr. labeled her disabled, but the nearly five years out of the work force precluded her from being eligible for disability though Social Security, as in our age group, they simply average the last 10 years of your life. Now, being unable to draw SS, she is also not eligible for Medicare. I have to keep working till I die to afford her meds, or they will just put her on the ice.

Seriously?
Not true at all.
But I guess standard of living, spending habits, budgeting, and general priorities are big factors.

This is what you have to look forward too in the health industry. My wife worked six years on the 12 noon to midnight schedule. 3 days one week and 4 days the next. She is off on maternity leave right now. They called her a couple weeks ago and said they hired some people and could she work 7 am to 7 pm. She was very happy and said yes. Its still working every other weekend. They callec yesterday and said things head slowed down and wondered if she would mind working 6 shifts in 2 weeks instead of 7. Unreal hire people and then cut hours. Go figure.

First, look in her purse, in that little velvet bag and get your balls back. Second, put your foot down, then put it down again.... She may wear the pants in the family, but you have to pick them out... This goes back to " If momma aint happy, aint nobody gonna be happy"

Diehard Hunter -- They think that way because they are TAUGHT that way! When I was in high school that is all they drilled into our head...if we went to college and got a degree that the doors would just open wide open for us, we'd go right out of college and into a $60k+ yr job versus the other people with just a HS education that would be making min wage and barely clearing $30k a year. I'm not lying or stretching the truth! That's why so many come out of college with that way of thinking IMO...because they have had it drilled into their head ever since HS.
No granted, some people did do exactly that. I can think of about two out of my entire graduating class that is doing well these days. Most of the rest of them are down there at the factory with me, doing the same basic jobs for the same pay I make with just a HS education. The only difference is...I have seniority over all them cause I went there right out of HS and they put in 2-4 yrs of college before they came there.
My cousin is another example. She finished her school in Asheville, NC and she was working into radiology field. Well she got a job at a hospital there while she was in school and as soon as she graduated they hired her full time as their X-Ray tech. Her first full time year she made $80k. Last time I seen her she was driving a brand new Porshe lol so she is doing very well.
