I wouldn't run retreads but I do purchase used tires regularly from the local salvage yards. One of the local yards puts there recent wrecked cars out front until they are ready to process them. I keep an eye there anytime I am driving by to see if they have anything I may need in the near future. I can usually get almost brand new tires there for half price or less.

If they are so great, why are there pieces of retreads all over the interstate?
18-wheelers use them because one blowout of 18 won't kill you. You need all four tires on your vehicle for proper travel. 3 of 4 will kill you.

Not defending the retreads. But when I was first told about them the other day, researched them online and found some studies that several state departments did. They concluded that all of this rubber on the road that everyone says is retreaded tires is combined between retreads and factory tire with the majority being normal factory tires.

Not a chance. I wouldn't feel safe with retreads. I'd save up a while longer and buy new.
X1,000.. no way in hell I would run retreads

I would never run retreads on a car or light truck. * Like TNDeerGuy said, there isn't a good company that retreads small tires. There isn't enough market for it, so there are no high quality systems in place for it. *Retreads are made for heavy duty use. For that reason, the rubber compound is very hard - not good for wet traction on light vehicles. * Obviously, retreads are on used tires. You never know the history of the tires. They could have run with low inflation pressure, which could cause them to fail. I never buy used tires for this reason - even for trailers. * Uniformity would be a problem. On heavy duty trucks, you can't feel as much, but in a pickup, you can feel everything. There is usually a lump at the tread splice.
Now, it's completely different for 18 wheeler size vehicles.
*For the drive tires, (the 8 tires that do the pulling), the original tread will last 250K - 500K miles, depending on the application. After that the casing is usually just fine and ready for retread. The retread tread will last another 200K - 300K miles. I have seen casings run over a million miles and be ready for more. (After a casing is past a certain age, the retreader will not retread it any more.) *The tread compound is formulated to handle the load and torque, and have good wet and dry traction under the heavy loads.
Now here is the part that chrmayo just brought up... The retread tread almost never peels off the tire of an 18 wheeler. Most tires never just fail for no reason. Almost every time it's heat related. When a tire is correctly inflated for the load, there is very little heat buildup within the tire. The heat from a tire occurs from the steel belts bending and straightening when rotating into and out of the foot print. If you stand back and look at the tire form the side, you can easily see where the tire goes from being round, to being flat. When the inflation pressure is too low, the angle gets steeper, and puts more of a bend on the steel belts as they roll. Of course more bending = more friction = more heat. The rubber between the belts can take only so much heat. After that, the rubber between the belts looses its adhesion and will allow the belts to de-laminate. In other words, the tread and belts will come flying off the casing. This usually happens when a tire picks up a nail or screw and has a slow leak. As it's rolling along, the pressure is getting lower and lower. Finally, the belts are flexing so much, that the belts heat up and let go and take the tread with it. It works the same if it is a brand new tire with 1K miles, or a retread with 1M miles.
The next time you see a "road gator", see if it has the steel belts on it, or is it just rubber only. If you inspect 100 of them, I would be surprised if you found any that were just tread only.

having worked for goodyear some years ago i have seen many a truckload get taken to be retreaded,16" & up came from kerns bakery & other company that had fleets of trucks.i have owned 1 set of wranglers that were recapped on a K5 blazer.they wore fine & no problems.a recap can be used on large commercial trucks in the steering if they are operrated less than 50 miles from the shop.i have a friend who was driving a cement mixer with a recap on the front when it blew out.he was in a coma for a short time if i remember correctly.i would not operate heavy trucks with them on the steering
