Rat got in engine and chewed up a bunch of wires, components,etc.. .
Vehicle will crank and run w/o pressing the gas pedal. When gas pedal is pressed, it will surge/jerk repeatedly, but stop when you let off gas.
Will idle/run around 25-30 w/o mashing gas pedal.
Sitting and idling , the rpm will surge and rev up and down.
Engine, hood, fenders, battery and all are very HOT after driving short distance.
NO dash alert lights come on, hasn't overheated, and everything seems to work except hazard lights and brake lights.
All fuses are good and not blowing.
Previous owner replaced some parts and a good mechanic for foreign made vehicles could not figure it out.
Any ideas ? Got a Haynes manual and willing to try to help my son out. He bought it from a guy and it made it 5 miles before the troubles began.
Mechanic spent and ate $500 and gave it back to him.
It is 1994 Nissan Pathfinder 4WD with V6 engine/automatic.
Mechanic did say engine and tranny were good and thinks it is a wiring harness problem.

Could be many things....will it run at all under acceleration?

Yes, I drove it and it ran great around 25 to 30 w/o accelerating.
That's when it jerks and jumps, but will at times quit for short period.
Just trying to think of everything that "may" cause this. I'm gonna cover all electrical problems, but could use help with other things from anyone who does this regularly.
I've got a multitude of mechanical skills, but been about 20 years since I did a lot of auto mechanic type stuff.

Is it throwing any codes? I would start with checking the mass air sensor and throttle position sensor TPS.

Not sure on the codes. Son is gonna call our mechanic and find out what all he did exactly. He's been at it for 50+ years, but after eating the $500 on what he believed it to be, he backed away,lol.
He did tell my son he wasn't able to hook it up to his computer for some reason.

Yeah this may be a tough fix. You will just have to track down all of the rat damage.

Looks like it is done between previous owner and our mechanic.
It cranks, idles and runs good enough with most all electrical working plus no fuses blowing to be worth a shot.
LOTS of new parts and wires and what not under hood.
Trying to make a list of what all may cause it. A list of what it is or is not doing.
Then look for common denominator. IF it is an electrical problem, I'll find it. IF it is beyond that, will probably need a little help and guidance. Thanks again.
