I got home from work yesterday after the storms passed through and our power had already been restored so my wife and I ate supper and all that. Well, after that I decided to go get on the pc and check out tndeer and facebook for a bit, but when I hit the power on my puter nothing happened. So I checked the surge protector and unplugged it for a bit and went to start it again and this time the fan kicked on and the hard drive kicked on, but still just a blank screen. I'm no computer expert, but I'm thinking it got the mother board because the HD still works (it still powers up and spins anyway) and the power supply obviously still works too. The only up-side I see is that it was old and I've been wanting another one anyway, but don't have the money now so I reckon I'm going to be getting one just not very soon.

Oh, and it also got our bedroom tv and dvd player as well!

Sucks...Maybe its just your monitor. File it on your home owners insurance.

On Monday, I had my buddy do some electrical work for me.

he installed a "whole-house" surge protector. That thing was about $100 but barring a direct lightning strike, we should be covered now for future surges.

the problem we have is not so much lightning itself, but the dudes that reset the tripper at the substations. For some reason they must have a kangaroo or chimpanzee throwing the switch, because the lights usually blink a dozen times in 2 minutes when they are doing a restore.

oh, and you supposedly can't do anything (to the electric company) about surges, even man caused because "we are a Co-Op" so no recourse or complaining will matter. So says the lady at our service center.

Yea, I wish that was the case. The monitor is still working though. I'm about to call my insurance man. I checked up and our deductible is 1k so I'm probably not going to be able to go that route. I'm going to call him anyway though.
