Are them horseshoe crabs of any use, or are they protected for some reason?

Are them horseshoe crabs of any use, or are they protected for some reason?
way I heard it was, they are protected because some certain bird migrates from somewhere like Argentina and when it comes through it feeds on the crabs eggs, so the crabs are protected. At least what one of the locals told me.
