Yeah the horseshoe crabs were all over the beach around the point, most of them were mating, probably hundreds of them. Pain in the rear trying to surf cast and having one wash right into your ankles with their spines, or snagging a mating pair on 8lb line and hauling them in.

way I heard it was, they are protected because some certain bird migrates from somewhere like Argentina and when it comes through it feeds on the crabs eggs, so the crabs are protected. At least what one of the locals told me.
