Just moved into a new house that has a fire place. I'm wanting to cut some wood but read that it needs to be dried for at least a year. Is this right? Also whats the best wood to cut and what should i stay away from? Thanks.

stay away from pine
maple,oak,hackberry-most dense hardwoods are good woods to go with
are you heating or just making a 'pretty' does this fireplace have an insert blower?
get a good screen to stop sparks from flying out onto the floor

Where we moved we tend to lose power 3 or 4 times a year and sometimes for long periods of time. So it will be used for heat. But the wife does like to sit in front of a fire. It does not have a blower and it does already have a screen. Hope that helps. Thanks for the quick reply.

Locust, oak, hickory, cherry. If standing dead or deadfalls just split and get it drying now to burn this winter.

split it smaller if it isn't real seasoned. most important get your chimney cleaned and inspected before the first fire.

White oak, red oak, and hickory have the most BTU's for common wood around here. I had some walnut several years ago, burned great, but really likes to pop!

That and seasoned dogwood burn about as hot as any wood I have ever seen. But you don't get much wood from a dogwood tree.

I always like burning hickory and red oak.....I usually burn 4 ricks of dry and 3 ricks of green a year. But thats in a Hutch stove, in the basement. I burned locust that had been dry for about 5 years. If I Didnt pay attention it would get the stove pipe cherry red about 3 foot above the stove. My advice would be have the chiminey inspected and cleaned by a pro, never burn those logs that advertise that it will clean creasote out of your chiminey....thays a good way to start a chimney fire. Never burn pine

I like HIckory and it's readily available around here. Oak is a second best followed by Hackberry and Locust.
No cedar or pine. Elm is tough to split, produces very little heat and leaves a TON of ashes.

My brother burns a aluminum can in his fireplace in order to clean his chimney.

No good for chimney fires, but cedar makes a helluva campfire...especially a white, hard-as-a-rock, bone dry cedar deadfall.
