After what my father has been through over the past month and a half I felt this should be known.
A little over a month ago my dad went in the hospital for knee replacement surgery. The surgery went without a hitch. I left town after the surgery to install some new furniture at a rental we own. A day and a half later I get a call from dads panic stricken wife that he is being prepped for emergency surgey!!
His lower intestine had perforated spewing waste into his system. He was lucky in the fact that he was in the hospital when this happened. As soon as we got back to town I called the orthopeadic[sp] surgeon to see what his thoughts were. He had absolutely no doubt in his mind that this was due to dad basically living on NSAIDs for the past couple of years because of his knees. He also informed me that it is happening more and more and that they require their sports patients to completely come off of anti-inflamatories after 30 days and stay off for 30 days before allowing them to start taking them again.
These are drugs{pain relievers} with seemingly no side effects{able to work while taking etc} but the effects are real-just hidden!
I've taken more ibuprofen over the years than I should have but will think twice going forward before taking it anymore.

NSAIDs are detrimental to kidney function.

my nephrologist bout fell outta of his chair when I told him a General Practitioner prescribed my 800mg Ibuprofen 2X for plantar fascitis (foot tendon. And I had been on that script for about 6 months.

not anymore. I'm all about the opiates. (rolley eyes)

it says it right on the bottles
something like dont do more than 8 in a 24 hour period or it can cause kidney and liver problems

so if someone does 8 every 24 hours im sure it aint a good thing either compounded over time

That is terrible, hope your father gets well soon.

A study in Britain (who has some of the best medical records in the world) suggests prolonged use of ibuprofen or other NSAIDs can increase your chances of stroke and heart attack risk as much as four times. Read more at the link below.

and what do you know! Aspirin is an NSAID. I've seen that too and wondered about the daily recommended 81mg aspirin that some cardiologists favor for their patients.

Tylenol is not an NSAID. I take #3 with codeine for my PKD pain.

In OCS, they used to give us a big bottle of 800mg Motrin pills every time you even glanced at a corpsman. We jokingly called it "Vitamin M" because everybody took it every morning when they got up. Was taking about 3200mg a day toward the end of the 3 month course, but that was back when I was 23. Hardly ever take anything but vitamins and fish oil these days.

Most things taken in excess and over a long period of time are not good for you. I will say a prayer for your father.
