the anti inflammatory pills i was on before both knee surgeries would tear my stomach up. i quit taking them .

Most things taken in excess and over a long period of time are not good for you. I will say a prayer for your father.
That is the key statement.
BY the way, Aspirin in 81mg has not been shown to cause GI side effects when taken with food, and is as cardioprotective as a 325mg dose, and yes it is a NSAID.
Care should be taken as well IF you are on an ACE-inhibitor and take Motrin, Aleve, Advil, (NSAIDs)as they can over time hurt your kidney function....well documented.

My prayers for his recovery.
I had to take a ten year break from ibuprofen because I had taken too many for too long. My GI insisted that I not take it or Aleve unless absolutely necessary (Gerd and Barrett's). The regular Dr. made me promise to be careful with tylenol,too. Now I can just take something if I just can't stand it anymore. You have to be careful with everything.

I've been taking 2 200mg a day for about a year now. I'm having my knee surgery on Monday and the surgeon told me to stay away from them for a couple of months.

Wow.  Guess I better find something else to take for my headaches/sore knee!
Just don't take them all the time. Moderation is the key.I was on an extremely high dose for several years. 1200 mg 4 times per day. Now I have to watch for gastro reasons.

That was the thing that was odd to me-his GP had him on them for years for his knees.
His surgery required a 10" cut up his belly. Ended up staying in hosp for 9 days and has had in-home care ever since going home. It also basically put a hault to any knee rehab. He was scheduled to have the other knee done this week. It will be in the fall at the earliest now.
