I'm new to actually camping with a travel trailer, so I've been wondering about you more experienced campers with pop-ups and even large tent camps. What if you need to go back into civilization for a few hours or go fishing for the day?
Do you have be concerned with theives getting into your stuff?
I've pulled into many a campsite and seen trailers with no inhabitants and have always wondered.
I'm planning a couple of weekend outings at LBL and plan on fishing and being gone away from the trailer. What are yall's experience?

Been doing it for years and no problems. We often leave camp to go to the creek tubing but I will lock up valuables in the truck.I lock up the pop up door but if anyone really wanted in it wouldn't be too difficult.

Gotta laugh at this one...my granddaughter (2 at the time) latched (didnt use the lock) herself in our popup last year. Wife was getting concerned and a little stressed. I just pulled the velcro on the door and unlatched the door. Probably just gave away the secret on how to break into a popup...
As for locking things up, I lock the important things in the truck when we will be gone, stoves, lanterns, fishing stuff gets left outside. I try to get a feel for who is out there and make eye contact with them. Makes it easier for them to recognize your face and hopefully recognize someone who should not be there.

Never had a problem at Piney Campground at LBL. Probably have left alot of things out that I shouldn't have but like wildcat said, everyone is pretty good about watching each other's stuff there.

Several years ago I went on a fishing/camping trip to the White River Game Refuge in AR. I was camping for a week. I was the only camper. I came back to the campsite (which was by a large swamp/lake) for lunch one day only to hear a boat motor crank up and take off. I saw 2 guys in a boat riding away with everything valuable that I had at my campsite...trolling motor, stove, lanterns, etc. I tried to figure out where they were going to come out, but it's a big swamp, and the road I waited for them apparently wasn't the one they used. Lucky for them. I wasn't as tolerant a few years ago, and I was a MS hillbilly/redneck that doesn't mind blood or the method of extraction. Lucky for them...or maybe lucky for me. Either way, probably best we didn't cross paths. I haven't been known for my 'gentle nature' when dealing with scumbags.
I like to think that I've grown beyond that now. But I haven't been tested in a long time, other than having to throw a guy out of my shop the other day.
Basically, lock up whatever you want to keep, and don't leave tools around that they could use to get into your locked stash.

I have never had a problem in my entire life of camping. I do not leave gear out to be easily grabbed. I have seen many people tempting thieves by leaving radios, fishing gear, and even tv's sitting unattended at their campsites.

I leave my camper set up in Kentucky all year.Just dont leave any thing valuable. All thats left in mine are a 110 ac unit and cheap microwave.Leave the doors unlocked year round.Let em come in and see nothing of value and leave.Easier than replacing the camper door after they tear it up.

I've been camping for 42 years and have never locked a camper trailer or pop-up and have never had a problem with items missing or stolen.
I will hide my "valuable" items out of site but otherwise I don't take any other precautions against theft. For the most part...campers are a group of good ole boys wishing the best for each other and willing to help anyone in need.

I will hide my "valuable" items out of site but otherwise I don't take any other precautions against theft. For the most part...campers are a group of good ole boys wishing the best for each other and willing to help anyone in need. I tend to think like that too, hopefully that's the case.
I just didn't know what the threshold was for temptation.
Bad guys are gonna be bad guys that's just that. I guess just try not to temp would be borderline people when you've got $50 coleman lantern hanging or $200 tailgate grill just sitting there idle.
I've come into many campsites and seen stuff like I mentioned above and thought to myself that people sure are trusting. I'm a little more reserved-maybe on the paranoia side of getting my stuff gangked.
just interesting to hear yall's input so far. I'm a little more relaxed after such.
I'm still torn over the "just leave it unlocked" idea. That's good psychology I suppose to an extent. I'd sure hate for someone to trash a window or pry my door open on my Jayco.
Maybe leave a cooler of cheap beer out in the open as a sacrificial offering, lol

Stovepipe...if they want your stuff...they are going to take it.
I don't worry myself too much about the small stuff and I have insurance for the big stuff.
Good luck for what you decide to do.

I have never had a problem, nor have I ever heard of a problem anywhere I have ever camped. I do make a point to introduce myself & family to any camping neighbors. Allthough I don't lock up everything everytime I leave camp, I do not leave valuebles out in open. I may leave lantern, grill & chairs & stuff out but I don't really worry about it, I generally tell camp neighbors we are gonna be gone & ask if they need anything while we are out and that kinda lets them know to keep an eye out. Just about everyone I have ever met in a campground were great folks. And locking the door only keeps the "honest folks" out.

Never had a problem at any campsite or heard of one either. You may lose a little kids toy by a 3 year old but that is mostly it. BUT do not leave anything in the shower house it will be gone in minutes. Never could figure out why someone would take a used comb or tooth brush or a used bar of soap, but you could see thousands of dollars of saddles setting around and no one would touch them!

We couldn't secure our stuff if we tried. Just too easy for someone to rip you off. But we generally meet the "Neighbors" when we go and pay attention to who's around.
Around here, there's no problems. But bad people look just like honest folks and you just never know...

been lucky I guess because we have never had a problem leaving stuff at the campsite. Just got back from Spring River for the first time. There are some rough looking people in that neck of the woods but had 0 issues.

Never had any issues personally, never left the camper out for months or anything though. I know there has been issues in my county though of people setting up meth labs in campers that deer hunters have left in the woods for extended periods.

My wife & I were campin once & we decidedto take the dog for a walk. I locked the camper but left the cooler, radio, fan & chairs outside. When we cameback there was a homeless lady sittin in my chair in front of my fan & was drinkin one of my beers that I had left in my cold cooler. I asked her could I help her & she said no she was just campin. I could tell she wasn't right so I tried to be nice at first but then I had to get angrywith her & she finally got upset & left. After she left I noticed she had left her bag layin under my chair. She came back later for it but I told her just like she had said the camper & radio & chair & fan was hers, I told her the bag was mine. She started cussin then I started cussin louder & finally she just left. I kept the bag though.

I usually show that I'm looney enough to not have anyone mess with my stuff. Hope I'm not jinxing myself, but I've been very fortunate that nothing's happened. Keep valuabled and doors locked up. Like others have said, the lesser stuff can be easily replaced and the bigger stuff is insured. LOL, we was at LBL a couple years back, we heard this good ole boy bout midnight stumbling around and singing very loudly Lionel Richie's Easy Like Sunday Morning.
