Earlier today, I was watching some of the US OPEN and they did a video piece about fathers and sons that had played in the tournament. They also pointed out the fact that on Sunday (father's day) there will be so many father/son and father/daughter pairs in the crowd.

I'm not sure why the USGA decided to play the OPEN on this weekend, but I'm glad they did.

Every Sunday as I watch the end of tournament, I am pleased by how many times the cameras find parents and children in the crowd. Many kids are on their dad's shoulder just taking it all in. Sometimes you'll catch a child and a father holding hands as they walk from hole to hole following their favorite player. Many times you'll see a father actually trying to explain something that has just happened on the course. The child looks on and listens with wide eyed enthusiasm. But undoubtably the best picture of all is late in the day when the camera finds a DAD with a worn out child in his arms, sound asleep. Not even the roar of the crowd as the winning putt goes in will disturb the child and he/she will probably not wakeup until Monday morning, wondering who won....lol!

I've often wondered what it would be like to see myself in a child's eyes. To have them look up at me with questions and looking for support. To call me DAD!

I envy each and everyone of you that has experienced this.

I'd like to take this time to wish each and every father out there a very happy FATHER'S DAY.

To the daughters and sons out there, if your dad is still with us, be grateful. If he is gone like mine, then I hope you feel a specialness on sunday that lets you know that he is still near you.

I'd like to take a moment to wish any father out there that has a child in the military a special thought and wish for you to have your child back with you asap.

If anyone has lost a child, well, I am sorry but I have no words that can even explain my feelings and sorrow for you. I do wish and feel sure that you will hold each other again.

To all, a very HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!!

From what I can remember, the U.S. Open is usually on Father's Day.

Wow. What a well written post. As a father I thank you.
As far as losing a child I can not imagine. I lost my older brother in Feb unexpectedly and I feel for his children and my father.

Prayers for all those who grew up with an absent father or lost their father. Also, prayers for all those fathers who had to do the unthinkable and bury a child.

For some reason, I can not find any info on WHY it is played on this weekend. I can't even find any info on if it was ever played on another weekend and moved to this weekend or anything...

According to the Wikipedia, Father's Day was originated by a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd. She was raised by a single parent father whom she wanted to recognize and originally wanted to have the date set at June 5th each year, which was the anniversary of his death. However she apparently didn't give the event organizers enough time to plan the celebration so they had to move it to the 3rd Sunday in June. The First Father's Day was celebrated on June 19th, 1910, however it didn't become a national holiday until President Lyndon B. Johnson declared it to be a national holiday in 1966.

Maybe this tournament was scheduled first, before the new Father's Day date and they decided to just keep it on the same day...I have no idea...

nice post Jimbo

but to me, just another Hallmark holiday.

I still have my dad, and I have three chillrens.....but we will still probably do nothing more than throw some hamburgers on the grill and chill out in the rocking chairs. Together of course.

All said and done:

priceless......none the less.

I can't speak for Father's Day but I can speak for Mother's Day and even my birthday. The best present for me is simply spending time with my family. If it takes a Hallmark holiday to do that, it's okay. Life goes by so fast and I don't mind something that reminds me to devote all of my attention for a day to something important to me.
