I picked up a nasty case of poison ivy or poison sumac a couple weeks ago while doing some scouting. I haven't had it in many years. Anyone know any good remedies besides the standard hydrocortisone and anti-itch creams from the drug store? Those just don't seem to help me much.

ANYTHING made by Technu.
They now have a pumice scrub that works wonders. I was chasing rashes from one leg to the opposite arm, and the Technu scrub finally did it in. I was using bleach for a while, but it did nothing, I was so riddled with it.
When i used to survey, I almost expected a Christmas card from Technu for being such a loyal customer. I swear by the stuff to this day.

Zanfel is absolutely the only thing I use outside of a doctor visit. About $40.00 a tube but well worth it. Only place I know that sells it is Walgreens though.

I've had good luck with Technu as well. A mixture of 50% bleach and water will also dry it up- but will burn a little if it's raw.

Get your MD to call you in some Temovate topical cream. It is the best I have ever seen/used for poison ivy/oak/sumac. Applying it twice a day will get rid of all of the above in 2-3 days tops; that has been my experience over the years. Another plus is a tube will last you for many years so you will have it on hand when you need it. I swear by it when it comes to poison ivy/oak/sumac.

Takes 24 hours for the urushiol oil in poison ivy to bond to your skin. If you remove the oil quickly after exposure, you will greatly lessen your chances of having the blisters appear. The best product to use to remove urushiol oil from your skin is mineral spirits. You can get a gallon of it for about $10 or so at Home Depot. Tecnu, which is the over the counter product used to stop poison ivy on the skin, actually has mineral spirits in it. It is NOT good for your skin to leave it in contact with mineral spirits, but most agree that the skin contact for a few minutes with mineral spirits is better than a week of poison ivy rash. Urushiol oil is NOT water soluble. It is an oil. You won't remove it with just rinsing off at the sink. You need that product with something that will remove oil from the skin to get it off of you. Most of the time that I've gotten poison ivy, I didn't know I had come into contact with it until the blisters appeared. Once those blisters appear, I've used an inexpensive prescription product called Clobetisol Propionate Creme 0.05%, which is a topical steroid. Every time I've gotten it I've just had to the call the doctors office and they've called it in to the pharmacy for me, without me having to make a visit to the office. Using the Clobetisol, the rash usually goes away in a couple of days.

It's a remedy for the rash if you already have it. But if you're tiptoing through the tulips, and you know you've run into some poison _____, they claim that the wash will dissolve the oils and prevent a rash.

Bleach. I put it on q tips and break open the area and mash the bleach down. Probably not the safest, but it actually works.

The best treatment for poison ivy, bar none, is PREVENTION.
Educate yourself on what the poison ivies look, for every season, then stay away!

I haven't had a bad rash in a while, I seem to be very mildly allergic, never got a rash during turkey season, walk through it a lot, maybe an itchy bump or two once in a while.
Wish I knew of a good remedy... one thing I know, do whatever to dry the rash out. If I remember correctly.
In Tennessee there is a lot of poison ivy.... in Pennsylvania it's bigger. and here in New Jersey where we are staying now, it grows into trees. Or at least very large sturdy self-supporting vines. It's nasty stuff...

Okay. Here is my input. A baking soda bath will be more soothing than oatmeal or calamine lotion. This also works great for chicken pox. It will not dry out your skin but will help dry up the blisters. The bleach may work. My cousin is horribly allergic and her Dr. tells her to go swim in a pool that uses chlorine. If she doesn't get to it in time, she gets the steroid shot and a prescription steroid cream.

Takes 24 hours for the urushiol oil in poison ivy to bond to your skin. Not trying to start an argument, but this info is not correct. Urushiol does take a little while to bond to the skin, but not 24 hours. This bonding can take place in as quick as 15 minutes. Therefore, if you know you have come in contact with the oil, wash off as quickly as possible.
Urushiol oil is NOT water soluble. It is an oil. You won't remove it with just rinsing off at the sink. Correct, but many kitchen dish soaps (especially the ones formulated to cut grease) will remove the urushiol oil.
Once the oil binds to your skin... well, your in trouble!
If I am in the woods and know I have come in contact with Poison Ivy, yet have no access to soap and water, I will rub dirt into my skin to pick up part, or all, of the oil.

I get that stuff from bein down wind of it. Heck I may have it now from it being mentioned on here! Swimmin in a chlorine pool helps dry it up I've heard. I also use calamine lotion. But gonna keep some of the other posted tips in mind for next time.

Plinker22, you are correct. The urushiol oil does start bonding to the skin upon contact. However, full bonding can take up to 24 hours. My point was that you do have some time after exposure to disolve the oil and remove it from your skin. The reason that some people think poison ivy is "spreading" often times is not because the oil is spreading, it's because the oil that is there took longer to bond to the skin and the reaction is delayed from the first onset of symptoms (blisters) from the highest concentrated intial exposure site (which typically is the first to show signs).
And I too have used Dawn dishwashing detergent to remove the urushiol oil from my arms when I didn't have access to mineral spirits. It worked just fine. I did a total cleanse 3 times with it just to make sure I didn't miss anywhere.
