Let me start by saying I am fresh out of college with a finance degree. I asked a friend of a friend who is a financial advisor to go to lunch with me "to talk about the whole finance industry and where might be a good fit for me." after we had lunch, I realized I had just set up an interview with him and his office.
Currently, I love my job. The job I have now has no ceiling as far as income so there is plenty of room to grow which I am Really excited about. The job I have an interview is at northwestern mutual. As far as I understand, it is a four interview process with the first two interviews seeing if this would be a good line of work for you. The good thing about the financial planner job is it seems there is not cieling there either. You just have to want to make contacts and talk to relatives, friends, etc about their finances. The thing about the finance career is that it would offer benefits, paid time off, and paid vacation. My current career does not as I am an independent contractor. However, my wife receives benefits now through her career.
So I love my current job. I have a passion for it. I seriously doubt o would have a passion about wearing a suit 5 days a week and talking to people about there financial situations, but it does provide benefits and such.
Any advice here? Should I call the guy and say "I'm sorry but I do not want to waste your time." or should I just go to the initial interview and just see how it is and not commit to anything?

Won't hurt to interview but sounds like your mind is made up. Happiness is more important than more money. I'm curious why you got a degree in a field you aren't interested in.

Like before, at least interview. Don't take a job that you wouldn't be happy at, makes for long days and finally you get to the point you hate going to work.

I'm a bond broker in memphis at a large firm and job you would interview for is tough one and is somewhat of entry level into finance.. they (especially Northwestern) put 1000's of new grads into the financial advisors program, give you about 300-400 leads and tell you to start calling. About 70% of people quit before first year b/c it's not easy. That's why they hire so many. It's a numbers game in the FA biz.. You will get rejected 100 times a day. Yes, no ceiling on what you make but you have to work your tail off and you will LIVE on the phone.. If you don't you'll starve. Anticipate making NO money for 2 years(this is pretty standard as you build clientele). You'll have to learn to be thick skinned w/ all the rejection and be able to turn around and do it all over again next day. Hate to be so blunt but I've been in finance for 12 yrs and I know exactly how it is and know people who have done the Northwestern job. That being said, you CAN be successful at it and make a lot of money but be prepared to work. It is ALL what you put into it and you have to be a self starter/motivated and remember it's a commission job you start every month @ $0. If you build clients it will become smoother (not easier). We call vacation days in finance "no pay" days...If you aren't on the phone you aren't making money. If you love your job now I want you to know what you'll be stepping into. They will sugar coat a lot of things in the interview so make sure you ask TOUGH questions and get clear answers.
