They usually don't smell bad until breeding season. Then they are freakin horrible! Cat piZZ x 1000!

I caught a pair of black racers "in action" right outside our living room window sunning in our pea gravel and when I got hold of the first one and turned around and caught wind of it I almost gagged! The second one was no better.

they will also "musk" if being handled or otherwise disturbed. i have never smelled it myself but have heard an aggitated copperhead smells like cucumbers.

yeah, usually when ever I relocate a garter snake, king snake or even a ring neck. They usually end up coiling around my around my hand and squirting a fowl smelling ooze on my arm. It's disgusting.
