I've been talking to some friends about carry permits and in light of that pharmacists thought maybe we could have some discussions about them. It's NOT about him but in general. We've made several threads about what kind of gun to carry, hosters, lasers, point and shoot, etc but I don't remember any about what to do "AFTER" the fact threads.
This is in no way any LEGAL advice, just some discussion, ever if a real lawyer comes on here it's still just talk over the internet and NOT legal advice.
I'll start off. I know I said no legal advice and it's not but a few years ago my lawyer told me something I've never forgotten and I saw basicly the same thing in a new book recently.
One of the most important things YOU can do "after" is making the 911 phone call. He pointed out several things as why the 911 call is so important.
#1, it's to get help. #2, it's recorded. They MUST keep the tape and if a court case is made of what happened then they must keep the tape for years. #3, this is one recorded tape your lawyer and the prosecutor CAN use in court. #4, in calling 911 you are talking to a sworn police officer, they might not carry a gun or be riding in a police car but you ARE talking to the police.
He also told me what to say and not to go beyond that.
Let's say a I was attacked. Call 911 Tell them my name and address
If someone is injuried tell them so and that help is needed.
Tell them what I am wearing and that I have a carry permit so let the police know that as soon as I see them coming in their cars I will put in on the hood of my car or other place. I'm hanging up NOW to call my lawyer and will make a statement and sigbn a complaint AFTER he gets to me.
Hang up and call your lawyer.
This reports the shooting and what help to send and it lets the police know you have a carry permit and where your gun is. Remember you've just talked to a police officer and told him/her that you want to speak to your lawyer, in effect you have told the cops you want your lawyer before they ever get there. Remember the 911 call is recorded and it is timed
This is just something I've never forgotten.

the VAST majority of dispatchers ARE NOT sworn police officers. Nor have the majority ever worked a day on the street other than from time to time may ride out with a cop

Of the few shootings we have had where it was a honest guy versus a bad guy, which is one shooting about every decade that we actually have a shooting, there has never been trouble for the good guy. Its just police show up, see dead or wounded bad guy, and the good guy is praised. I pray we never reach these situation I hear about where it gets so complicated for the good guy that he needs to do certain things after the fact.

Never heard it put that way....about telling 911 you're calling a lawyer. I can't say that I would remember such a line of thought if I ever have to make the call.
I was taught the following:
My name is ______, and I've just been involved in a shooting at _______. (Do not say "I SHOT SOMEONE!" It could be considered an admission of guilt
I need police and two ambulances (one for you, one for the dead guy). I will be here wearing ______, and I have a carry permit.
or, I am not safe where I am, and I will need to go somewhere else for police and medical attention.
A few, "Oh my God! I thought I was going to die" comments help establish your fear of death or imminent injury. Other than that, do not go into details. Just repeat that you were involved in a shooting.
Stay on the phone with them, and when the police show up, then you need to lawyer up. Not all 911 operators are sworn police officers.

Oh, and always emphasize the need for medical attention.
1) Police can't question you while under the care of medical personnel.
2) Healthy or not, you're in the middle of an adrenaline dump, and may not be aware of physical symptoms of high stress.

Your right. Here in my county and the nearby cities all are police officers but in some places they are not.
Still the entire 911 cal is recorded and can be used.

Who has a lawyer lined up? I don't, except the guy that wrote my will! Hopefully I won the gunfight and won't need to use him!

I do.....his name is Patrick Stegall in Memphis, and is an active member of the TN Gun forum. Much of his legal career is dedicated to gun owners rights, and defending carry permit clients in numerous instances. He has represented me for a couple of traffic tickets, and told me to keep his number in my phone, and always carry his card. Call him anytime day or night if I get into trouble.
