And what about that is any differant than anything else our government is involved with?...I would much rather the government be loosing money subsidising the loggin industry with the direct effect it has the localised economy thru the folks that ARE ACTUALLY WORKING FOR A LIVIVG then to be continualy throwing money away subsidising programs for people that ARE NOT WORKING AT ALL ...

I don't agree with several Gov. programs that, in my opinion, waste money but this was one that they tried to do something about. I don't like to see areas clear cut when it cost the landowners money. If the landowner isn't making anything off the timber, why should it be cut? In this case the Taxpayers of the US are the landowners.

This may be why the Upper Bald River Area is being proposed as a new area instead of an expansion of the Bald River Gorge area. This would allow all existing roads to remain open along with all existing campgrounds. Where did you get this information?... The bill itself lists Upper Bald River as a NEW wilderness area. I remember when you could drive all the way to Crowders Orchard in Citoco before they designated Slick Rock and upper Citico as wilderness areas. To my knowledge, the only trail or road that was gated was the one that runs from Farr Gap to Crowders Orchard. This was not even a forest service road but a trail that hunters had cut and widened over the years. There was indeed road all the way to the crowder place, it was even maintained by the forest service just like the rest of the road were. And when that "NEW" wilderness area took affect, the road was immediatly cut off... ..the access road was also blocked above Charlie Mountains old home place at the sunken bridge above where pine mountain, big stack trail head out. That closed vehicle traffic into the upper citico from there. The road was also barricaded at Beech Gap on the state line where it turned off the Cherohala, cutting off all vehicle access to the upper citico trail heads from that pont as well, and it is a boundry road that just runs long beside the wilderness area for several miles before it even enters the area.
I just wouldn't be to sure about what might be grandfathered in when it comes to wilderness designation....
The bald river gourge is 3700 acres,..The newly proposed is 5 times that big...I would be interested in seeing just where the boundrys are being proposed.

I was at Crowders Orchard before the Forest service started maintaining that road. I believe we will have to get an actual copy of the bill before we will know exactly what is proposed but if the article that was posted is correct not much will change. If I was guessing, I would think that the boundaries of the new area would roughly match the Upper Bald River Party Dog Hunt Area.
Here is a copy of the bill but it doesn't go into the exact boundaries of any parcel.

I was Climbing the apple trees at the crowder place and throwing down apples for my grandmother to make apple butter with over 45 years ago!... Here is an article that gives a little more detail about the area as it was being view in2004. This article just lists the proposed area at just over 9100 acers, this latest proposal is over twiced that size... I used to go with my Dad to that area about that same time. There was no link in your post. fixed it... From what I read in those articles there seems to be no loss of access for anyone. Like you I think the Significant Economic Opportunities ( http://wilderness.org/files/Economics-Plus-Wilderness-Monroe-TN.pdf ) May be overstated.

There is really a good map there that shows the proposed upper area, as well as an addition to the the existing gorgue area. Holley Flats campground is included in it....I am willing to bet that it will be a guarantee that If that entire area goes into wilderness, the access to the entire area will be closed where the forest service rd 126 (to holley flats) leaves the tellico river (with exception to access to the grave yard at green cove), And it will also be closed where 126 meets the firetower rd on the other boundry....
A Wilderness designation IS NOT A COMPROMISE to any type of multi use recreation at all. It never has been yet. Nor is it reversable that I have ever heard of... I firmly beleive that ALL access into the entire place will be foot traffic only, as it is in the citico as well as the slick rock wilderness areas now...
I just don't see this as something that needs to done at all, it serves no purpose other than it is an agenda from the wilderness society to permanantly deny access to the area and to tie up the renewable resources in that entire area. That and just to put a couple of ~green~ feathers (votes) into the hats of a couple of politicians IMO...
