LOS ANGELES — The civilian board that oversees the Los Angeles Police Department has put the brakes on the city’s red-light traffic camera program.
The Police Commission agreed Tuesday to reject a proposal from police officials to award a new contract to the company that has been operating the cameras.
An audit last year questioned the effectiveness of the program, finding that a majority of citations have gone uncollected. Commissioner Alan Skobin says that since the courts don’t pursue drivers who refuse to pay the tickets, the camera program lacks enforcement power.
The board’s decision could shut down the cameras in days unless the City Council decides to strip the commission of its authority on the issue and decide whether to continue the program.
The problems for red light cameras go back to 2009 when CBS2/KCAL9 Investigative Reporter David Goldstein found there is no evidence the cameras reduced accidents, deaths or injuries at the intersections where they were placed and in fact, found those numbers actually increased at some intersections.

Well if no one is paying the tickets then it's not doing much good. Here in Iowa they said if you don't pay your tickets, you won't get your registration and license for your vehicle each year until all fines are paid.

My grandson while stationed at Ft Drum got one in a nearby town. He didn't pay it but when he went to renew his licence in Kentucky a red flag popped up where the state of New York had placed a block on his licence. They mailed the ticket to his home address in Kentucky and his step dad the butthead threw it away so he didn't even know he got one untill questions started being ask and he admitted it. It took several phone call's to the town of Ellisburg NY to get it taken care of. They doubled the fine since he didn't pay by the due date.

No to hijack, but what if some one is driving rental equipment, what happens? Wouldnt supprise me if they didn't have a list of rental plates and could track who had that car out on that day and time. They have ways to check all kinds of things...grandson's car was registered in NY with NY plates but the ticket was sent to his home address in Ky rather than where he was station in NY.
$85 for the fine + $85 what they called scuflow fee, (they tack that on if you miss the court date) and $ 40 more to reinstate his driving privelges in NY.

Des Moines TV station was out talking to several businesses last night by one of the intersections where they have the cameras. One owner said he couldn't believe how many people stop now instead of running the red light. While the tv camera was running it showed several cars not even slowing down and coming to the light as it was already red and driving right on through making the other cars stop. You get a ticket for this type of driving , I say too bad and if you have a certain amount in a year, loose your license for awhile.
