Need help with Deck..

I have a deck on the back of the house that my father in law put up before I got the place. It is weathered but I dont think its too far gone. I hit a little place with my pressure washer and looked like its going to clean up good. My plan is to replace the railing and clean up the rest and either stain or seal it. This is where I need help, should I go with a stain or a sealer? What do you guys think I should use and what brand of stuff would yall use. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

That depends on what you like. When you seal it, it will be the color it is when you do it. Treated lumber turns gray as it drys out, so is that the color you want? You can stain it any color or shade you like. If you catch it soon enough of the shade you like, seal it, if not stain it. Both ways are good, just depends on what you prefer.

Does the stain protect it the same way that the sealer does? How often will I have to do either one of them?

I used Thompson's Water Seal on mine.
I got the kind with color added to it.
Best I can remember it has been about 5 years since I did it and it just now needs it again.
I poured it in a pump up sprayer and sprayed it on after I power washed my deck and it dried a few days.
