I have a mid 80s model 50hp mercury outboard thats acting up. Starts up great and idles fine, blast off fine and after about 100 yards after planing out it starts surging and comes to a stop but never dies. Tried pumping the primer bulb while after planing out when the surging started and it fixed the problem as long as I pumped it about every 10 or 20 seconds! Anybody have any advice on a fix for this problem? Thanks in advance!

I'd try a new priming bulb first and go from there....

Is the vent open on the cap of the gas tank? That's what it sounds like.

check the easy stuff first but it also could be a small piece of trash in the carb sucking up.

It sounds like it's either sucking air or possibly sucking the fuel lines closed. Did you use fuel line instead of just vacuum hose when you replaced the bulb?
Just a thought.

Check the pick up line and strainer in the tank.

I second the fuel pump, do you mix your own oil with your gas or does it have a oil injection? For your wallets sake I hope you mix your fuel and gas.

Would it be possible for the fuel pump to work fine for a short distance then act up? After it acts up and I let off the throttle, I am able to take off again with no problems for a couple hundred more yards then the same thing happens again!

did you burn all the gas out of the carb when you took it out of the water?

Sounds like vacume problem in the fuel line. Is the bulb collapsing at all? Had one on backwards once...yes I admit it!

There is a slight difference in the line and bulb assembly, on the old one the bulb was a couple feet down the line from the motor and then there was about 6 more feet or so to the tanks, and on the new one, it is opposite, with the bulb a couple feet from tanks and the long run going to motor, may switch it and see if it helps. BTW, acts up the same with line on either tank! Thanks to all of you for trying to help me out on this, Ideally appreciate it!

I replaced my fuel/oil pump last year. And mine was acting just like you are describing how yours is acting.

Sounds like a fuel starvation problem, but I wouldn't rule out an electrical problem. Are you sure the battery is good? A dead cell in a battery, or bad battery cable connections might allow it to start, but not run very well. Computerized ignitions won't work well ,if they don't get at least 12 volts, and should be about 13.8 across the battery with the engine running, if the alternator is working properly.
I had an electrical problem on a 150 hp outboard once that even stumped an experienced marine mechanic. The motor would run fine for about an hour, then would start surging, and losing power. He replaced the ignition power pack which didn't fix the problem. I later found out that the deep cycle cranking battery was the problem. The deep cycle wasn't capable of supplying the current the engine needed. I got a new battery, and never had any more trouble.

And, most mercs have a fuel filter where the line connects to the engine, it might be clogged.

install one of those clear inline fuel filters above the primer bulb to see what kind of flow your getting. this will rule out the fuel pump. if the fuel pump checks out ok then do a spark test. this will rule out any ignition problems. if your getting good spark then order a rebuild kit for the carbs. its either fuel or ignition related so thats what you should focus on

{ Tried pumping the primer bulb while after planing out when the surging started and it fixed the problem as long as I pumped it } this is what he posted, here is my summary, lack of fuel pressure to carbs or restricted in the carb, fuel pumps use to be cheap.gas is clear & without a flow meter looking at a clear fuel filter would be like looking at a stream,no way to measure flow

I had exact same problem. bet he finds it is connection of fuel line or primer bulb related. Let us know when you get it fixed.

I have the same motor and had the same problem. Twice! I work for a marine company and this is where I would start. First, make sure nothing is in the fuel tank. Any piece if debris can stop up the pick up tube. If that's not it, rebuild the fuel pump. That motor has a diafram fuel pump, they wear out. Rebuil it. It cheap and easy. U should be good to go then.

Mine did the same thing ( 25 Merc ) I would try a new gas line and bulb first I went out and bought a new tank fixed it right up! Tank and line was not much more than what the line was going to cost me.
