Our ac unit hose keeps freezing solid and it doesn't cool good when it does. The repair guy said it was a relay and replaced it. That didn't work. Now he says it is probably the blower motor. Could this be right? It sounds like it is coming on when the unit kicks on but the hose still freezes solid. I need help before I pay him more money to not fix it. Ideas?

Sometimes when they are low on gas they will freeze up. I would consider having a different tech look at it.

low freon,lack of airflow-dirty airfilter-dirty coil-fan motor not turning on or running fast enuf ,lot of capacitors bad makes the fan motors get hot & quit good luck

That's what I was thinking but he says the charge is good on the high and low side. I am stumped. It froze up a couple of years ago inside the return and outside. It was very low on freon. My guy that I trust, filled it and checked for leaks. I wish he could come and look at it but is swamped right now.

i would start with low freon.. good luck with it. i feel for you its blazing out there.
i had ac problems last year and ended up replacing mine. i hope its a longgggg time before i have to agian.

have somebody clean the condenser coil,the suction will prob drop way down & show a low charge,

Bow, i figure you or stik have tried this already but if not spray out the vents with a water hose. considering on how old it is they can get alot of dirt and debris in there over years time.

I wish one of you lived near me. I'm just not real sure about this guy. The neighbor boy (renter- it is his unit) is the one having to deal with him. I told him what you all said. We'll see how it goes this time.

Well I understand your reasoning but from an hvac tech's point we are experiencing record high temps and most companies don't have extra people to send out to second guess things.

It could be the evaporator fan motor is getting hot and kicking off. Most fan motors have a high thermal limit and shut the fan off when it gets above the limit. It usually starts shutting down periodically and eventually the fan will go out completely.
If everything is clean, the capacitors read the correct MFD and the refrigerant charge is good.
It probably needs a new evaporator fan motor. This is basic HVAC and the Tech should be able to pinpoint it when he returns and realizes the relay he installed is good and power is sent to the fan but yet it is not running. The fan will sometimes cool off and start up again, but by then your suction line will be frozen and even the evaporator coil.

We had a similar problem with ours last summer. It turned out to be dirty coils on ours.

It is running now. So far, so good. He did credit the cost of the relay to the cost of the evaporator fan motor thingy. We'll see how it goes. Thanks to everyone for all of the info.

He had originally replaced the relay switch. That only work for a few hours. When he came back, the neighbor boy was armed with the info I was so graciously given and they cleaned everything real good and found that the evaporator fan was indeed messed up. He replaced it and checked the charge again. It has been running fine for 24 hours now. This guy came at 11 last night to recheck and finish fixing it. I will give him kudos for that.
