All of my permenate stands will be set in the next month or so. They are all dedicated to rut terrain features (funnels), fall planted food plots or rut bedding/breading areas. I know these from hunting places for several years and lots of scouting in the late winter.
I won't hunt a lot of these stands until mid to late October.
The whole month of September and most of October I will be mobile in a climber and my lone wolf hang on and chase the food sources. Fields first then acorns as soon as they start falling.
If its for early season yo uneed to wait and see where the food is or you will be sitting and ruining a potentially great spot for later in the year.

I didn't expect this much response. Thanks! I think what I am hearing is I better wait to see what is happening later before I hang a stand since I am not for sure they will be in there in the early season.

I didn't expect this much response. Thanks! I think what I am hearing is I better wait to see what is happening later before I hang a stand since I am not for sure they will be in there in the early season.
Just depends on what your wanting, what weapon your hunting with and the property your hunting. If its with a gun and your wanting to hunt a known terrain feature and if your familiar with the land, you can put it up now. If your bow hunting and want to see what the preferred food source is at the time you want to hunt, I'd wait. Remember, food sources can change over night. I usually leave my lock-ons and ladder stands around terrain features, and hunt the food sources with my climber. You have to be versatile and willing to move when it comes to hunting food

Back when I hunted seriouslty on large tracts of land in several states, My pre-rut and rut stands were placed within a few days of the end of the current season. Yes, lots of traveling to place 25-40 stands in different states.
My stands for early bow season may be placed in early to mid September so as to be able to accurately pick most likely feeding areas and hang the stands on approach routes. Sometimes they would be adjusted when needed and hunted immediately.
Everything else, what I called traditional stands, the ones that produce every year, were hung in August or left up. However, I have moved and relocated many stands and climbed right up in them and killed deer. The most memeorable was a mature buck that offered me a shot as I was nocking my arrow after moving a hanging stand and climbing into it. I believe he came to the sound of me hanging the stand.
As I said, I was serious about it, then. I hunted two types of deer. Trophy bucks and just deer and I hunted around 100 days a year. Easily, I spent another 100 scouting and hanging stands.
It was how I made a good portion of my living.
I WILL NEVER WORK THAT DANG HARD AGAIN FOR ANYTHING!
If you care to look, (I wouldn't bother) I wrote a three-part piece for I believe, NAW a few years ago entitled Proper Stand Placement. It deals with all facets of placing stands. I suspect it might answer any questions you have.
today, all three of my stands have been in place for over seven years, I see no reason to move them. I don't scout because there is nothing I need to scout for. I anticipate killing three or four deer this year, one may or may not be a buck. I'm not serious about it anymore. Now I fish instead of hanging stands. Come to think of it, time for me to pack for a trip to Chattanooge to join RSimms for catfishing.

IMO, the best traits a hunter can have are mobility and open mindness.
Basing your stand placement on the success of others on other properties is nonsense, to me.
Differences in terrain, pressure, food sources and the deer themselves make it hard to conclude where to place your stands based on what other people do in other areas.
With that being said, if I could give anyone any advice about early stand placement it would be this. Base you FIRST stand on two things. The first thing is the natural terrain . get an aerial and find where you see funnels or something that NATURALLy bring deer to a certain point. The second thing would be VIEW. Depending on what type terrain you are hunting, I always like to be able to see as much ground as possible for the first few days to even a week or more of the season. THEN I move closer and even closer , if need be. Be mobile!
Taking in all the info that the deer themselves will povide by their movement will tell you more than anyone on here can.
If I get a new place to hunt, I use the first season to LEARN the place. Oh, I take my weapon and go hunting, but I never get discouraged, even going in to a second or even third season ....
I like to look for OLD stands in a new area. They were put there for a reason.
