my 17 year old son is considering the early enrollment thing,,the recruiter guy just left,,he was way younger than I expected,,
everything sounded good except the not if,but when on the Afghanistan questions. even with that I think it may be the best thing for him to do..he more or less hates school, and the way times are I don`t know what direction he could take that he would come out any better off,,

I'll bet it's his daughter. I remember his son is a little too young. Uh-oh.... If I had a daughter, and she wanted to be in the Marines, I would have to do an intervention. Seriously.
Not a Marine, have no daughter, but I understand where you're coming from. Interestingly enough, I have a close friend, retired USMC JAG Lt Col, whose daughter reported to Quantico for OCS yesterday and he couldn't be any happier.

I do know a lot of outstanding female Marines, officer and enlisted, but it is a very tough life for a woman. Best of luck to your friend's daughter. OCS is tough.

Best of luck to your son in making a very important decision. A lot people will tell you to get everything in writing, etc. I think that joining the Marine Corps is most about wanting to be a Marine. Setting yourself up for the best benefits or job once out of the military is best left to the other services.
The worst morale I've seen in Marines are young guys that want to get into the fight and then land with an MOS like supply, and let themselves become dejected. But I've seen more Marines unhappy with their MOS keep their chin up and work toward acheiving their goals despite not being happy with their MOS. After a successful first enlistment there's a possiblity of lat moving into a different MOS. And there's always getting out and going to school with the GI bill.
Best thing for your son to do is try to learn about the Marines by studying the history and traditions of the Marine Corps and then deciding if that's what he wants be a part of. Check out the movie "Ears Open eyeballs click" ....it's a documentary on actual boot camp. And for a little propaganda:

Stayed in it all through my senior year, and when we got to boot camp the Drill instructors did tell us that 9 months after we graduacted we WOULD be in Iraq and he didn't lie either.
