is there a good web page for snake identification? personally i feel threatened by a garter snake but want to know what if what I have been seeing is poisonous, with the kids running around out here it would be nice to show them what to look for.

Dude, we ARE the Snake Identification Website!! ;\)

There's a page for TN snakes, but it isn't a complete catalog. Some pics are available. I've used it, sometimes to find the answer, sometimes to get an idea of what to search for elsewhere:

LOL Sunday night I was hauling a van of church teens to a drive-in double feature when my phone rang. Was an older neighbor/church lady: "Keith! Are you at home?!" Nope. "Well my neighbor has a SNAKE on her PORCH! We need you to come GET IT!" Umm... can she tolerate just ignoring it for a little while and staying in her house? It will leave shortly. "I CAN'T TOLERATE IT BEING NEXT DOOR!!"

I don't know how their drama ended, but I do know how Kung Fu Panda II and Thor ended! ;\)

If it has cat like eyes, it poisonous. If the pupils are round, its not poisonous.

Get real close and look into his eyes and see what shape the pupils are...let us know how that works out for you.

Another way to tell if a snake is poisonous is by the shape of the head. Poisonous snakes have a head shaped like an arrow. non-poisonous are more rounded. Remember, out of all the different species of snakes found in TN, only 4 are poisonous, pigmy and diamondback rattlers, cottonmouths and copperheads.

hmmmmmmm, didn't know we had diamondback rattlers in TN. I thought they were all Timber Rattlers. I know there are some pygmy rattlers in western Tn.

Snakes can only strike 1/3 of their body length. You have to be within 1 foot of a 3 foot long snake to get bit. The easiest way to tell if the snake is venomous is to look at the shape of the head. If it is rounded it is non venomous. If shaped like a triangle, it is venomous. I would not consider killing any snake until it has been identified. Most non venomous snake are very vital to the ecosystem and play a great role in reducing rats and mice and other small rodents. I wouldn't recommend killing a venomous snake either, but if you have children around, their safety has to be taken into consideration and unless you are trained in handling snakes, I wouldn't try to pick one up. About 98% of all snakebites are a result of handling or trying to pick one up. I was bitten by a copperhead when I was 14 years old and it is a very painful experience. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. \:D \:D
