This might be better suited for the TWRA forum, but I'll post here because its more fun.

Shelby Forrest:

-Can only hunt on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
-Gates are closed and locked on all other days and when seasons are closed.
-No scouting on non hunting days, no scouting during off season.
-Spring squirrel season is closed
-There is a sign when you enter one of the primary WMA entrances that still proclaims "Not Unit L", even though I understand it to have been absorbed into Unit L in recent years. The sign consists of stick-on letters, easily removable with a pocket knife or chisel, yet still remains and causes one to wonder "Is this really Unit L?" Confusing.
-Additional Fishing permit required in addition to any state fishing license including Sportsman's license.
-Safety zones cover large sections of the WMA even though non hunting visitors are prohibited from venturing off established roads trails. At the very least, much of the safety zones could be archery only areas. -any argument against this would have to take into consideration that there is a (actively used by someone) shooting range in the middle of the safety zone, despite severely compromised backstops and a primary hiking trail running perpendicular to the shooting range back stop. Granted, the trail is 300 feet lower in elevation then the shooting range.

So, Shelby Forrest. Why so many regulations, why so difficult? Hunters and non hunters share many stretches of public land, both state and federal, and yet I can think of no area with so many hunting regulations. Overall, the regulations make the place kinda suck as hunting grounds.

I don't know. Those are good questions, and you should also post them in the TWRA forum.

The lakes are more of a park lake than TWRA lake, thus they charge fees. That's how I understand it.

I did not know you could'nt do any scouting on non hunting days or during the off season.

As far as the wmas talk to twra, as far as the park, the park itself doesn't set the regulations, they are set in Nashville

It's a compromise between the state park and the agency. Different missions and different user groups.

Although Shelby co. is in unitL, the WMA has specific regulations for deer hunting: the taking of does during the gun season is not allowed.
