There's a good reason taxidermists around here have trouble staying in business and it isn't the lack of mounts to be done.

Sorry. Have to dissagree 110%. I know many who have hunted Africa and three who are going later in June of this year. A few learned the hard way. NEVER have one mounted there unless you want to use iy for a comedy piece and then have it fall apart in a couple years. In addition, the shipping will kill you.

Bowriter, just like any taxidermist here, you got to do your homework. There are some horrible work done there no doubt but there is also some outstanding work done there. You just have to know who to use from what I am told. A friend went last summer and recieved his mounts a couple of months ago. They are great looking mounts, even the pedestal mount of the Kudu. He spent hours and hours doing his homework to find the best he could find. He paid for them no doubt but imo the money was well spent.

Ruined capes of African game can't be easily replaced either and customs can be a nightmare for that.

You are 100% correct. The place to start your homework is right here in the good ole U.S of A. Find out what permits are required and how to get both capes and mounts through customs.

The do some very simple math. Get the cost of shipping mounted heads, ones that are properly crated. Now add to that the cost of the taxidermy work. Now compare that to the cost of shipping the capes plus the taxidermy work here.

Next look at a map. Africa is a very big continent. Rules vary from country to country. The rules for SA may not be the same as for another area. A good taxidermist here, one with a long and good reputation for mounting African game, will know just what is required for each area. For example, mounts or capes can ber shilled to various ports of entry here in the U.S. The paperwork may differ for each port. Then the goods have to be shipped from that port to the final destination. As I understand it, they may have to come through a licensed taxidermist in some areas.

I have known many hunters who have hunted Africa. I have yet to know one that was even inclined to use a taxidermist over there. I just recetly saw pictures of six heads done there. They were comparable to Gil's bobcat. The worst horror story I ever heard was the rhino that came back mounted with a hippo cape. True story.

I am sure there are some good taxidermists in Africa. Far easier to do your homework at home. If I was going to spend what an African trips costs, I would not gamble on the taxidermy because if it does not suit you, there is not one thing you can do about it. If they don't send you the mounts (happens frequently) that is just tough and you will have payed in advance.

I just this week put two hunters in touch with a taxidermist that I know does great A. game. He does a great deal of museum work and restoration, (actually a friend of Knight up in Alaska). He spent a half day going over all the forms and shipping instructions at no charge and he is not gauranteed the work. As I said, far easier to do the homework here.
