Ever though I have private insurance I still might sign up to become a member.

I signed up for their newsletter and really enjoy it. I just haven't joined yet. I guess I need to really check the member benefits.
I can get prepaid legal through work and have the fee taken out of my check. I suppose I need to see if I could use it if I ever have to use my gun to defend myself. Thanks for the info.

Pre-paid legal services run about $322 here in Memphis. This includes your spouse and siblings under the age of 21. It covers almost anything from shootings to IRS problems, court appearances for a variety of issues, etc. Like any other insuranceit's not worth a dime if you don't need it but worth it's weight in gold if you do.

$322 per year? Per month? Lump sum?

surely not monthly- ya think?

I remember back in the day before "gun permits" you had to be bonded to carry. That was only a couple hundred bucks a year.

Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network This may be of interest. Worth checking into for $85 per year.

If you think about how much your monthly premiums cost, factor in the amount of time between shootings, could you not open your own interest-bearing account to use as your Legal Fund? I've had my permit now for 4.5 years. All I have to show for it is a worn holster and bigger pants.

Say for instance, your premium is a simple $10/month. In the 52 months that I've been carrying, that's $520 with no interst. That in itself should cover the phone call to the lawyer and the follow-up to the investigation. Once you're vindicated and ruled justified in shooting, you're immediately immune from civil liability. I can't imagine the legal premiums being that inexpensive.

A person could do what you have mentioned but most don't have the discipline to do such a thing. Also being "vindicated and ruled justified in shooting" can sometimes take a long time.

I was a practicing attorney for many years and I would not accept legal insurance. In most cases the coverage was poor at best and I was not willing to submit a claim to an insurance carrier hoping I would get paid. I always viewed pre-paid legal insurance as a rip off. The best insurance is do not pull a gun on someone unless you intend to use it and you feel your life or the life of another is in imminent danger.

Not doubting you, but I've never heard this before - I thought that civil is separate from criminal. Is this just Tennessee, to your knowledge?

He is right, if you are not found guilty of a crime, there is no civil suit to follow.
