I used to think Memphis was much worse than it is. I lived in Murfreesboro and Nashville for 10+ years before moving down here. Most Nashvillians have a very gloomy view of Memphis.

Memphis has its own thing going. It takes at least a year of living hear to "get it", because I didn't like the first year I lived here. Once I "got it", I really started liking it and, in fact, like it increasingly so all of the time. I walk to the bar, ride my bike to bank, shoot my bow in the yard and my neighborhood has a fiber optic network. I have a lot of friends and clients come into town and everyone that visits, has a spectacular time.

Yes, there is a lot of crime, but that can be avoided once you know what's going on. The biggest distractor is the politics of the city, but, otherwise, the food will kick your a$%, you can escape into the rural setting of the Delta in less than 15 minutes, and its in Unit L. I live in the heart of the city and hunt ~70 days a year.

I agree with Poser on Memphis. As long as you don't go into the hood (which is about 85% of the city) its a fun place to live. Only been here 10 years. It took a little bit more time for it to grow on me.

I lived in Memphis for three years back in the 1980's while going to graduate school at Memphis State University. I was a little apprehensive about moving to Memphis because of the population mixed but I really go into living there. It really is the nicest large city to live in. Never had a problem but was always packing heat in the event there was trouble. The people were very nice and courteous. I do remember that you were hard-pushed to find an ugly looking girl at Memphis State University. They were all pretty young ladies and very southern (that is a good thing) and they that were not hard to look at.

No disrespect intended, but Collierville ain't Memphis! Your real estate in that area is meant to exclude the normal Memphis crowd. Don't blame you by the way

Jackson Hole, WY sounds like it'd be a neat place.

Memphis proper is a dung heap. If you live on the outskirts of Shelby County, it's nice, but that isn't Memphis. I lived there for three years from 1989 through 1991 and couldn't wait to get out of there. The good parts of Memphis are pretty small. I wouldn't move back there for love nor money.

wow..27yrs in a place you hate? sounds like you had bigger issues but glad you are finally in a perfect area (western KY). I've heard lovely things about KY ;\)

Memphis is fine, like most any other place, it is what you make of it. Memphis is easy to live in..jsut go spend some time in chicago or atlanta or other big cities w/ similar demo's and it's easy to come back here. There's plenty to do and enjoy

For those that live here and disparage your OWN city you are the biggest problem. Kinda like like telling everyone in your home you hate them but since you live there you'll put up with them. The obvious answer to those who live here but hate it..get the f$$k out. If it's that bad, there should be no excuse you have that should keep you here, BAR NONE. The guy who lived here for 27yrs and "and would never call it home" sounds like he wasted 27yrs of his life which would be his own fault. For those that want to rip the city that don't live here, surely you can find better use of your time.

Does memphis have problems? Bad areas? sure, name me any other bigger city that doesn't.. no you can't include bumblef$$K TN or W. KY where walmart and sonic are the 2 biggest employers. Big cities have big problems no doubt but also produce jobs, revenues, etc. My favorite folks are the ones who, live across state lines, beat the hell out of the city but come in to work here everyday. Seriously? you rely on the city for your livelihood but scream about how bad it is? You know exactly who you are too. 49 other states that would be glad to have ya'

have a good holiday weekend.

You don't know the first thing about me at all as for wasting my time, I'm wasting more of my time responding to your post than anything else.

Like a lot of other people here know my family owned Dealer's Auto Auction and I owned several other business on the side, all in and around Memphis.

As for not calling Memphis home. I was born and raised in Paducah, Ky and that was always home to me, still is today.

It's you that is the biggest problem by far in you attack on me. You also showed how little you know about Western Tn or Western Ky as for the biggest employers.

If you had thought a little you would have seen all I did was post a link to a news story that said Memphis was #5. but I guess you would rather people not know that and not know the true crime rate of Memphis. You seem to look at Memphis though rose colored glasses. Yet here you are attacking me for posting this. You have a lot of growing up to do if you don't think Memphis is not #5. Just add up the FBI crime numbers and Memphis is always in the top 15 for the last 20 years. i didn't make them up, the FBI did. Just last year Nashville was also in the top 15 and has been in for the last 20 years. I posted a link to that story too, more than once.

not an attack on you, just tired of people jumping on the "I hate memphis" bandwagon everytime a new story comes out about the city. You posted the link so you had to realize there would be responses. I would do the same If I lived in Nashville.. Posting the links in public forums, you are knocking the city whether you think so or not.Memphis is a good place we raise our families and call home. I will defend it everytime b/c there is a lot unwarranted hatred for the city but many of us who live here work very hard to improve and grow our city. I work with two foundations, ImpactMemphis and TasteOfJubilee and we work hard to improve all aspects of the city. I don't know you nor do I want to but I'm glad you and your family made your living off of our "terrible" city for 27 yrs. Did you do anything to help grow/improve the city or did you just cash the checks?

I'm sure you would defend paducah the same way if there was a constant berating of your city. You posted the link..we all know memphis has problems, thanks for driving the point home.

I'm through.

BS. The link was to the story and you want to OVER LOOK THE FACTS though your rose colored glasses.

Memphis is rated #5, NOT because I said so but because of the OFFICAL NUMBERS.

And yes, it was an attack on me. You pointed out not once but THREE TIMES about my 27 years.

You were attacking the messager, not the CRIME RATES. you want to COVER Memphis's crime rates as nothing much.

You want people to quit talking abouit Memphis crime rates?? Do something to BRING THEM DOWN, trying to cover them up and not tell anybody about them does not work.

You should re-read, I never disputed the facts.. I agreed there are problems. Some of us work our [censored] off to improve where we live so these type postings are more of a slap in the face and all the illicit responses they seem to get. No rose colored glasses here my friend. I see the problems first hand.. I am in the inner-city frequently working with kids for the jubilee schools working to give impoverished children a better education. We see all kinds of crime, blight, etc. but we are working on it. If you want to call that BS, then so be it..public forum so your entightled to your thoughts.

I didn't call that BS, I called what you said in your other post BS which it is and you well know it.

Take a ball team, they have a 5-19 season this year, the year before a 6-18 season and the year before that a 3-21 season. People are bad mouthing them and complaining. What do you do?? You blame the people that are complaining which is what you did in your first two posts, you ever said so and told them to ..get the f$$k out those are YOUR words.

In your first two posts you blamed the mesaager and not the crime rate.

Like I said, I lived in Memphis 27 years and I've been all though the city and the area around it. I know the bad and good parts. The funny thing about Memphis is outsiders think one has to go to the bad parts to get illegal drugs when it's the better parts that are doing a booming business in the trade. how do i know? I know several people in that area that are DEA.

Something else. Almost everybody that has GOOD things to say about Memphis seems to have a CCW permit. Now WHY would they need that???

The only people that I know that like Memephis are the ones that have grown up there. Nashville is nothing, and I mean nothing, like Memphis. Where else could the School Superintendant have his contract bought out by the city because he's an idiot and then the public vote him in as Mayor? I'm thankful that I don't live there anymore and I wish the paperwork for the sale of Memphis to Arkansas would hurry up and get finalized.

Crime rates are actually about the same or actually higher over the past half decade. The way they are reported has become much more CREATIVE to make people feel safer.

never had to worry about it
the other cities i worked in the airports and they are never in the best of neighborhoods
the jackson hole airport is close to the base of the grand tetons
it was a thrill just to drive to work every day and see that
but it got really cold there
we didn't have an air traffic control tower there so we had go go out and stand on the tarmac with a radio when the planes were coming in
the coldest day i had to do that it was 48 below zero
it got so cold the next day that everything shut down
they planes couldn't land because their tires they said would shatter like glass

There is this weird animosity from Middle Tennesseans directed towards Memphis. The city doesn't really get that kind of animosity directed towards it from East Tennesseans.

For Hangnail and others, I spent about 9 years living in Murfreesboro and about 3 living in East Nashville before moving to Memphis. I live in the heart of Memphis with all kinds of amenities within walking distance, I ride a bike on numerous errands, I have a garden in the front yard and another in the back, I shoot my bow down the driveway with up to 50 yards distance to do so. No stupid Home Owners Association to tell me what to do, in a very diverse and little bit funky neighborhood. Lots of blue collar workers, retirees, a couple of college students, a cop, a successful restauranteur, a recording studio, a shade tree mechanic, and two college professors live in my street. In fact, it is very similar to where I lived in Murfreesboro. Check it out:

My street in Memphis:

My old street in Murfreesboro:

Not really that different, eh? The houses in Memphis are a little closer to the street, the properties not quite as long. I definitely saw the Murfreesboro Special Weapons Unit raid houses in my old neighborhood in Murfreesboro, can't say that I've seen that happen on my street here in Memphis.

I have a good buddy who was born and raised in Nashville and then lived in Murfreesboro for 15 years. His view of Memphis was very similar to Hangnail's and he was very vocal about it. I talked him into coming down for a couple of days, stay at my place and see how I am livin'. We went fishing, we went out to dive bars with no enforced closing hours \:\) , we ate BBQ nachos, we rode the trolley downtown and checked out the river, etc. Everywhere we went, he struck up conversation with interesting people. After his stay, he went home to Murfreesboro and started applying for jobs in Memphis.

I ain't saying I intend to live in the city for the rest of my life, because I don't, but it works for now and I like it. I'll take Midtown Memphis any day of the week over suburban sprawl, strip malls and gated communities. This place has character. Of course, there is crime, but you just have to be be sensible and have situational awareness, but you should be situationally aware anywhere you live.

Poser,

Just what did I say about Memphis besides the fact that I never called it home??? Just what are my views???? Please post them because I would like to know.

I always went HOME for Thanksgiving and Christmas and I hunted with my family at HOME. And I would always go back to Memphis when the holidays were over. Is that a crime???

I don't make up the crime rates, the City of Memphis does in it's reports to the FBI. All I do is post a link to the news stories about it. Yet you and the other guy are GOING TO MY VIEWS, what views???

By the way, do you have a CCW permit?? If so WHY??

Here's something this thread made me think about.

I was working over at one of the rental houses today and on the way home I stoped at Wal-Mart. I ran into a friend and we got to talking, by the time I was done visting with him and finished my shoping over an hour had passed while I was inside. No big deal right?

No, just a normal Saturday afternoon. In the back of my truck in the open with no topper was over $3,000 worth of tools and more inside my trucks cab plus my cellphone and briefcase was in the front seat. Both my windows were down. Everything was just like I left it, nothing missing at all. Like I said, a normal Satuday afternoon.

Anybody want to try that in Memphis???

I use to have to travel to Memphis. I had to work there for weeks at a time.
I used to go to a hole in the wall in Midtown called the Buchaneer I think. Also enjoyed the Bahama breeze eats by the mall.

As for the rest? Well I found it to be dirty, horrible roads and just a horrible place.

That is my opinion from what I saw there. Memphis is one of the last places on earth I would want to live.

I have been to a few others that I dislike more.

Detroit, Atlanta, New Orleans, St. Louis to name a few.

Memphis is in my top 5 for sure. I here the same from many people that live there, have lived there and that still live there.

Everyone talks about King Willie and how corrupt it is as well.

I always tell anyone that is going thru there to fill up in German town and don't stop till you get 30 miles past the bridge into Arkansas.

My 2 cents.

I'm happy that you're happy in Memphis. I wasn't. Believe it or not, there are a few areas in Murfreesboro that I wouldn't live in, buy rental property in or visit friends in. I can say that since I moved to Murfreesboro, I've yet to have to chase someone out of my truck with a hatchet, have tools stolen out of my truck (the cab) or have a car stolen. All happened in Memphis in three years. I don't read page after page of race baited, race hating ignorance in the daily fish wrapper.

My soon to be ex-wife's family all live around Memphis, not in it anymore. Germantown, Collierville and Olive Branch, Miss., are the locations of her siblings and parents. Everyone lived in Memphis proper when we did and now nobody does. They all say the same things about Memphis as you, yet they live somewhere else. I get it. Really.

I live in Germantown which is a suburb of Memphis. If I just dont watch the stupid news or read the rag of a newspaper its a great place to live. Yep the news and paper make everything about race but in fact on a day to day basis I have never had any problem with anyone of any race except listening to way to many people complaining. I have no doubt it is a dangerous city and dangerous not only in "bad" neighborhoods but it is not where I live. Weather is great, one heck of a lot better than Jackson Hole Wyoming or most anywhere north of the Mason Dixon line. Spent a good bit of time in Murfreesboro which is really just south Nasheville nowadays. Nice little city but really not any better than suburban Memphis. Been around Knoxeville and I will take Memphis first just casue I dont wanna drive on icy roads with hills added.

jamesboy, Mufreesboro is thirty miles from Nashville, hardly South Nashville. I grew up in Nashville and wouldn't live within Davidson County free. Murfreesboro is no haven nor is anywhere else. I've expressed my dislike of Memphis having lived there with small children. We chose to leave before the kids started school and are tickled with the outcome. If you're happy where you live, enjoy it.

Benn to Knoxville.Fine place and I ain't a Tennessee Fan! lol
I could live there easily!
Chattanooga use to be a great place as well but it is now going to be if not already over run with Hood.
I suspect Chattanooga to be the next little MemphAnywhere in M Middle Tennessee seems good.
Franklin and Murfreesboro are just to busy for me.
Clarksville is a great place but Tiny town rd area is starting to thug up pretty bad.

Hangnail I know it is 30 miles south but lots of people live in Murf and work in Nasheville and as you go down I24 its pretty much continual housing and shopping the whole way. Its not as different from Nasheville as Germantown is from Memphi.

I lived in Memphis for over 40 years, no living in the boro,
Glad to get of Memphis,
I lived on all sides of Memphis at on time or another.
Yes, there are some good locations in Memphis,
or what is now Memphis thanks to the previous Mayor.
Memphis is dangerous place to live and travel if you are not
familiar with Memphis,
I have lived in Frasier, Whitehaven, Raleigh, Oakhaven and couple others, all those locations once were real nice areas, not several of these locations you dont want to be in even in the middle of the day.
Glad I am out of Memphis.
I still have family there, but they are in good area for now
maybe not for long.

Going to the Buc tonight for Day 3 of MemphisHatesYou fest. Lots of good bands playing there tonight. It's a good venue to get up close and personal with the band.

Been to the Hi-Tone in Midtown several times and never had any problems...including leaving around 2 am. \:\) You just have to know which areas/neighborhoods to avoid, keep your wits about you, and not to make it obvious that you're lost.

The worst things about memphis:
1. Crime or just having to be around the criminal element.
2. Memphis politics and the idiots that vote in anyone that looks like them making the city a joke nationally.
3. Memphis drivers.
4. The police department that won't do anything about #3 because they drive just like them. I almost never see a squad car use a turn signal or drive the speed limit. I have even witnessed 2 squad cars drag racing on 240 in the middle of the night at well over 100 MPH with no blue lights or sirens on.
5. Horrible road conditions.

The best things about Memphis:
1. FedEx
2. Good food

If it wasn't for my job I would be living on the TN River somewhere. Someday I will retire there.

Ever been to the basement of 201 Poplar, which is General Sessions? That place is a freaking ZOO. A lot of them are traffic cases. But it's like a revolving door. People get cited for driving on suspended licenses, but that doesn't stop them.

Memphis used to have an XFL football team called the Maniax and their logo was a crazy looking guy with pinwheel googly eyes. When we were getting the Grizzlies basketball team from Vancouver, there was a lot of talk of changing the name since there aren't a lot of Grizzly bears in west TN. One of the more popular ideas floated was to call them the "Memphis Drivers" and use the same googly eyed logo from the old Maniax team. The chant at games would be "Memphis Drivers...No Survivors!" They stuck with Grizzlies though.

Good post. And I couldnt agree more. Ive lived in and around Memphis for 50+ years. Im not crazy about the place, but hey, I gotta make a living. Lots of ugly places in and around Memphis. Lots of mean people too. Alot of em got a huge chip on thier shoulder. I just treat em all with respect on the front end. And we see how it goes from there.
Like I posted earlier. Springfield Armory goes with me every where I go. I got my permit in 1996. I have pulled it 4 times since 1996. All they had to do was see it and thier whole demeaner, attitude and intentions changed.
Im sure somebody on here will say, just stay outta the bad places. The last time I pulled my gun was in north Bartlett. (Not exactly the place you would expect trouble) Four male blacks cut me off and decided to mess with me. Didnt have to fire a shot, all I had to do was show my weapon and I have no clue where they sped off to.
One day Im going to get the heck outta Shelby Co. But until that day comes. I will be cognisant of my surroundings.

As a city, Memphis generates the highest tourism dollars in the state. The city's historical architecture (of which Nashville painfully lacks), unique culinary offers, and musical history attract tourists from all over at a rate almost twice of what Nashville gets. I've run into vistors to the city before who are here simply to spend a few days doing the "BBQ Tour." Europeans make the pilgrimage in a endless supply to tour Sun Studio, eat BBQ, catfish and fried chicken and spend a couple of days down in Clarksdale MS.

I am also surprised how quick many of you are to run down Chattanooga. While the city may be experiencing the crime rate of a growing city, let's not forget the virtual industrial dump that city was in the 1970s. There was a time when you could stand on top of Signal Mountain and not be able to see the city below due to the smog. While the crime rate may higher, the population growing, that city has almost completely reinvented itself and has become a destination for outdoors enthusiasts from all over the place: hiking, paddling, mountain biking, climbing, fly fishing. So, you would prefer the industrial wasteland to the present state of Chattanooga? The general complaints seem to be more applicable to any city with over 250,000 residents. The suggestion that living in Memphis is comparable to living in a 3rd world country is ridiculous. The city has made considerable contribution not only the cultural heritage of the state of Tennessee, but the world over.

I spent quite a few years as a touring musician and have been to 49 states, every major city in the US and quite a few places most of you have never heard of. I've definitely seen urban squalor, walked 4 blocks through the ghettos of Philadelphia to pick up some Chinese food from a guy standing behing bullet proof glass, had a gun pointed in my face in a cemetery New Orleans, almost been intentionally run over by a car in a cobblestone alley in Savannah GA and took a a%$ beating in a bar in Ireland after a table of young, Dubliners overheard me mention something about not liking soccer.

At the same time, you can run into some flat out mean folks out in the country. I returned to a trail head on the Appalachian Trial one time to discover that every vehicle in the parking lot had been utterly vandalized: flat tires, busted out windows and all for someone's amusement. I was camping in Grundy county one time when a truck pulled up, someone got out and emptied a tube of shotgun shells in the general direction of our tent and laughed about it and then jumped in their truck and drove off. I got attacked by a shark while swimming off the beach in Dayonta FL.... Bad things can happen to you anywhere. What about the girl who was recently abducted in a rural area of Madison County, for example? Ask any of our Cannon County residents about a garbage sack of human bones in the bottom of a wheel.

While it is easy to look at crime statistics and conclude that Memphis is a "bad" place, we could easily spend an equal amount of time talking about the meth problems and associated crimes that plague rural, semi-rural and suburban Tennessee counties (and yes, Rutherford County, too). While, yes, there are violent crimes taking place in Memphis, understanding the city will generally keep you safe from such crimes, yet I have numerous acquaintances in rural areas of the state who have had their valuables stolen from their homes to feed a drug habit, more often than not, of a relative, neighbor and "friend" of the family.

Therefore, I make it a point to maintain situational awareness and use common sense no matter where I am.

Poser, I think you went to Memphis City Schools. Memphis is nearly a BILLION dollars behind Nashville in tourism dollars generated. I have never met ANYONE that has spent a week in Memphis on vacation. To think Memphis has a leg up on Nashville in the music industry is ignorant. Memphis has the Blues, Nashville has Country Music. Guess which one makes big money? How many Blues stations are on the radio in the whole state? The only things Memphis ranks higher than Nashville in is crime and welfare expenditures. Face it, Memphis is a zit on the arse of Tennessee in so many areas. Now, please stop making me defend Nashville.

Hangnail,

Memphis receives more than 10 million annual visitors who have a total economic impact of $3.2 billion locally, according to statistics from the U.S. Travel Association. About 50,000 jobs in Memphis and Shelby County are connected to Memphis’ tourism industry.

Visitors to Nashville bring in $3.2 Billion annually to the city in direct spending.

The tourism and convention industry accounts for over 56,000 jobs in Nashville, second only to the healthcare sector.

But, these numbers don't actually reflect the full story. My ol lady works in tourism and, trust me, Memphis generates more tourism dollars than Nashville.
Sun Studio gets over 1000 vistors a day. Graceland, which I do not know the numbers for, gets many times that.

As for the music thing, I never stated anything about money generated by the music business. Tell me where in my post I stated that "Memphis has a leg up on Nashville in the music industry?" I work in the music business for a living and can talk you up and down all day long about this stuff. I said Memphis attracts music tourism. Nashville does too for that matter, but Europeans seem to be more interested in Blues and come to Memphis and Clarksdale by the droves, in a endless supply. I simply stated that Memphis played a vital role in music history. Surely, you won't deny that.

As for the industry itself, I moved away from Nashville because, frankly, there was no longer any advantage to living there from a industry standpoint. Whatever necessary infrastructure that once existed there has moved on for a variety of reasons, but mostly for technology. The copyright, publishing, legal, and Performance Royalty Organizations have become the core of the music industry in Nashville.

I'm not trying to make this a Memphis vs. Nashville thing. I like Nashville, I lived there for a long time. I do business there frequently and sneak in some hunting while I'm at it. I like Murfreesboro, too. I lived there for awhile, had great friends and deep connections in that town. Kleer Vu is one of my favorite restaurants in the state of Tennessee. I just think that many Middle Tennesseans display a unfounded animosity towards Memphis. I moved here from Middle Tennessee and I'll defend it.

Unfounded animosity toward Memphis? Hardly. I have personal experiences to base my animosity on. That's good enough for me and apparently I'm not alone. There are people that love East St. Louis too, but that doesn't make it a prime place to live.

I can say that Baltimore Maryland is a boil on the butt of humanity over Memphis!! Also Philadelphia is right there with it!

I also agree on the Meth Problems in the rural areas like Crossville TN!! Geez that is ruff right there as well.

Still Memphis is just a plain nasty place. I have been all thru it and the roads are horrible and the hood just seems to envelop the place!

You can call it what you want and God Bless any of you guys living there.

I meet a bunch of tourist in Nashville and when they ask about Memphis I say Don't do it. This is just from my experience of having to stay over there weeks at a time.

To many bars on windows and talking to hotel clerks and gas station attendants thru Glass!

Like I said I hope all you guys stay safe over there.

I do know that Memphis was the number one location for the series the first 48 till King Willie kicked them out. There was a reason they loved Memphis so much on that show.

The violent crime can not be denied and being number 5 counts for something.

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. If you are WHITE and not involved in illegal drugs, Memphis is probably safer than most large American cities. If you are white and get murdered in this city, somebody that you know is the killer. Black on white crime is almost unheard of.

Now if someone can come up with a solution for all the meth tweekers that are stealing my stuff in Benton County, population 16,000 or so, I'd appreciate it. I don't have those problems here in Memphis. LoL

It's getting to where you can't have anything if you aren't around 24/7 to watch over it. Until some of these thieves are killed slowly and their pictures are posted in public places, it will get worse, most likely. Having stories on the news doesn't do any good as the thugs don't watch the news.

I will have to agree on that. Meth heads are a bigger problem than hood rats. Those guys will steal everything you own for sure. That would get old quick.
