This is a VERY good question and further needs exploring.

I am very PROUD to say no, they did not. I actually would be ashamed and feel like a failure if I did ask. My parents gave me life and raised me, that was their job. Its not their job to support me as an adult.

I have never asked my parents for anything. I can't even remember asking for Christmas or birthday gifts as a child.

I was raised on a dairyfarm. I worked and was paid from around the age of 8. I used my money to buy things that I wanted or needed. I bought ALL my own clothes during highschool. I saved and bought my first motorcycle, the year Yamaha came out with YZ80. I saved and bought my first car. After getting out of the Army, I bought my first 10.5 acres of land.

I think its a shame more children today aren't raised in this manner. Maybe they would appreciate their parents more and learn the value of material items.

My daughter is 11 years old and I am teaching her as I was taught, to appreciate what her parents teach her rather than GIVE her. She works for me on the weekends during school and every summer. She is compensated for her work. She saves her money. When she wants something, she buys it. My daughter does not stand in any store and pitch a tantrum nor scream at the top of her lungs wanting something.

Is there anything wrong with a parent helping their child with a down payment, deposit for rent, etc I must say no.

But I have also seen many times over the years parents that buy and provide ALL this for the children and I think it is wrong. IMO...it sends the wrong message and teaches the child nothing about the value of a dollar or what it means to work for or earn something.

There is a truck in my driveway right now that my daughter will drive when she is old enough. Will it be hers? Only if I sell it to her and she works for it. If you could ask her this same question right now, she would reply the same as I did.

My first car was a 1956 Chevy with no brakes. I saved my money working at a burger joint after school to buy the car. I regret it now, but I sort of lied to my parents about the brakes. I told them that the brakes "might" need a little work.

I worked another 2 weeks @95. per hour to get the money to fix the car. In the mean time, I drove the brakeless car to work. Very stupid I know, but luckily, you could shift down to first gear while moving slowly.

Also, they had bumpers at the parking spaces at work and I only had to drive about one mile to work with wide shoulders on the roadway. Crazy, crazy, crazy I know. I will use the excuse of being only 17 years old, but there is no excuse to lie to my parent. My Dad was working 16 hours a day and didn't have time to check out the car. The only time he had, was to try and get some sleep. 1970

Oh well. He won't sell me the car. What does a blind man need with three vehicles?
