OK, I'll admit to getting a little gunshy with the spring we are having tornado-wise. If we make it through tonight, I'm seriously considering putting in a storm shelter at the house for the family. From my online research it looks like my best option will be one that goes into the garage floor (if it is possible with the Williamson Co. rock).

Do any of you folks have any experience or recommendations on companies to install one for me?

All I've seen are the big fiberglass spheres that you bury in the dirt. Then again, we don't have rock in Memphis.

I think those are probably the cheapest option, but I doubt I could convince the family to run out in the lightening and rain to get in one every time the siren goes off.

I'll never buy another house without a basement.

scn, whichever way you go, make sure someone (or several)knows exactly where it is located. That way if something happens, and it's buried in debris, they will know where to look. I think that is why they can't find a lot of people in Mo.

some of the houses with basements had the homes blown away and debris dropped in the open basement including cars.. only way to have a safe basement is to have a interior room with own ceiling, walls. heavily reinforced .

pay close attention to 3:50 and after. the family was in this basement and survived but had the concrete pad fall on them.lot of serious injury .

I had a block layer incorporate one into the new addition of our home. Myself and another guy designed it and my mason done it.

It's on a separate footing 12" blocks up to the finished floor elevation and then 8" blocks up to the ceiling. Basically like a concrete bank vault.

My hollow block voids (every void)were laced with 1/2" rebar anchored to the footing and then the walls were filled with 5 cubic yard of ready mix delivered grout. After that, I had overhead cross laced rebar welded to the protruding wall rebar and a form was fixed and poured for a 6" think concrete ceiling.

I have a commercial steel door and steel frame that was fixed as the blocks were laid. The door opens inward has a keylock knob and additional deadbolt. I have two additional draw bolt latches that still need to be welded on but, I'm all lazied out. My room is 7ft X 7ft and from the interior master bedroom is disguised as a walkin closet.

Only thing that concerns me is anything >EF4+
I did however design this room so as nothing as attached to it. No rafter hangers, hurricane wall ties, nothing. Hopefully the rest of the structure will freely breakaway. At least that's my hypothesis.

Interesting idea.
I would want it big enough for beds for everyone and lots of water and food, just in case.

That's pretty cool right there. First time I've seen something like it. Most are bolted to the garage floor which takes up space and the ones outside aren't too appealing on the eye IMO. Any idea on cost?

This is really eye-opening to me. Never had any tornados in my area and I was never really concerned until one hit Greene County a few weeks ago which is only about 30 miles from me.

One of the local TV channels did a story on them and said they were booked through the end of June with all the tornados in the news lately. Said they start at $5,400 and go up from there.
