The Storm Prediction Center is expanding their HIGH category risk area for tornadoes and other severe storms to include all of West TN and parts of Middle TN. The HIGH risk area--the area at greatest risk for long-lived, powerful tornadoes--is an area bounded by a line from Little Rock AR, to Memphis TN, to Nashville TN, to Lousiville KY, to Indianapolis IN, to St. Louis MO, back to Little Rock.

If you live in this area, don't be away from weather media sources today.

Bryan,

If you were caught outside (far away your house or truck) in the "ridge & hollow" lands of say Humphreys or Stewart County when a tornado suddenly was heading your way, what would you do?

Whould you jump into the nearest creek or what?

I sure hope I wouldnt ever be in that situation Wes! \:o

I would most definately get in a hollow and hope that there was a rutted-out creek in the bottom of it. Thats how most of the hollows are at our place in Hickman County. They are all dried out and some are actually pits in the ground from where when it rained, waterfalls made trenches. Some are only 3 feet wide and about 6 feet deep. I'd hunker down in them suckers more than likely

I would get down off the ridge-tops and try to find anything that would act as a wind and falling tree break, such as a rock outcrop or any depression that would prevent direct exposure to the wind and would protect me from being crushed by falling trees.

The biggest killer when it comes from tornadoes is not being picked up and thrown by the wind, but being shreaded by flying debris. A tornado can pick up fairly large rocks and entire trees, sending them flying at well over 150 MPH. At 150+ MPH, a tree, a rock, or even just a tree branch or 2x4 will go right through you. Even blades of grass and straw have been driven through the sides of buildings. Even plain dirt at 150+ MPH will sandblast your skin right off. Flying dirt has been known to sandblast the pavement right off the road in a matter of seconds. If flying dirt can sandblast away several inches of asphalt in seconds, think of what it can do to you.

Good advice.

But also remember those dried out creek beds can fill with water very quickly and violently.

I saw that to Stovepipe, that is a very good chance. Got a new storm shelter ordered but hasn't been put in yet.

And the scale only goes up to 8. Looks like this would be a good time to go back to Florida!
