My wife and I have been out there several times. Usually just flew into Billings, Mt, rented a car, and started driving. It's a wonderful place to visit in early September. Finding a motel room at a decent rate was never a problem. You could spend your whole time in Yellowstone proper with amazing and new sights to see every day. The elk will be in the rut about that time, and bison, moose, mule deer, wolf, grizzly, etc. can and probably will be sighted.

Things to do or see in the area: Drive over the The Beartooth Mtns from Redlodge to Cooke City; visit West Yellowstone; don't want to miss seeing Jackson Hole and The Grand Tetons; Cody,Wy home of the Buffalo Bill Historic Center.

Some of the places to see might require a little driving but the sight seeing is wonderful. Wouldn't rule out visits to the Bighorn Mtns or even a trip to the Custer battlefield.

Ya'll gonna love it!

Tetons park a must see???

I agree, never been to eith place but would prefer the least amt of time in yellowstone and more in the tetons.
"road to the Sun" is sometimes snowed in until July!!!!!
"Road to the Sun" is in Glacier National Park, hundreds of miles north of Yellowstone.

We did the Tetons and Yellowstone on a last minute lark from Rawlins,Wy, the second weekend in October this past fall. We spent the night in Rawlins, drove to Jackson Hole,wy thru the Tetons and spent the night there. Did some Teton exploring that afternoon and again the next morning. The lodges were closing for the season that weekend. I understand there is usually snow by then, but there was not any when we were there. After we finished the Tetons in the a.m., drove into Yellowstone at the south entrance, stopped by the West arm of Yellowstone Lake, then on to the Old Faithful Inn, where we ate lunch(the new visitors center at the Geyser basin was just opened. After lunch watched a fly fisherman in the Firehole river, then on the north entrance, Mammoth Hot Springs. The old fort Yellowstone buildings are there, which, of course is where the place got its name. Then back to the south on a different road, stopping to view a black wolf in the Hayden valley. Then out to the East where we overnighted in Cody,wy. Obviously, an accelarated trip, but we saw a lot in a short time. For our money Grand Teton National Park is the place, not as crowded(although crowds really weren't at problem that late in the season). We think that the Grand Tetons are about as beautiful a sight as could be possible on this earth. A neat trip, but a "three nighter" to get home to Jackson. Cody to Sidney Nebraska to Clinton, Missouri.

Went to Idaho to see my daughter and grand daughters. While we were there we took a side trip to Yellowstone and The Grand Tetons.

if its still there in jackson hole go to orville's
it a second hand store and you can find some really cool stuff
i was working there in 87 and 88 and in two years i still didn't get to see it all
the number one thing i would recommend is a white water rafting trip down the snake river
and if you go to the local hardware store you may run into harrison ford he likes to hang out there
the silver dollar saloon is kind of neat place to go see they have saddles on the bar stools
one really important thing is to closely observe all traffic law and prohibitions in the park the rangers are basically a law unto themselves and will not tolerant violaters in any form or fashion thats their piece of heaven and they intend to keep it that way
you may be a little late in the year to see the daily stage coach robbery and shoot out
take the time to read the historical signs some of them have some really amazing stories to tell
i would suggest going to teton village and taking the tram ride to the top on a clear day the view is awesome
if you are feeling really brave drive through pass going to idaho falls they don't have gaurd rail up there the deep snow makes them useless

We drove up to Teton Pass, the road that you mentioned. Pretty, dry, Sunday afternoon, but I still wasn't too thrilled with the amount of traffic and the hairpin turns. No particular problems, except that the locals wanted to go faster than me, a first timer. lol
Check out Wyoming dot cameras website, which has streaming cameras of the pass and parking. Lots of "do-it-yourself" sking at the top.
And I suspect that Jackson Hole has changed a great deal since you worked there. Pretty crowded with various types when we were there, some obvious tourist, and some locals, and maybe some very recent "locals".

I was ther the 2nd week in Oct. of 2010. Not much traffic at all. The Tetons were incredible. Wilson Rd. to Moose Junction, North to Summit overlook is awesome & you could hear lots of bulls bugling when the wind wasn't blowing. Firehole Canyon in West Yellowstone is a nice ride & enjoyed goin out W. Yellowstone along the Madison River. Visited the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson Hole however them saddle barstools ain't real comfortable. We stayed at Teton Village at a place called Snake River Lodge & Spa, awesome place with 5 star service. We traveled N out the N entrance of Yellowstone into Gardner Mt, Gardner is a crappy little town with a bunch of cuckoos hanging out at the bars. Mammoth Hot Springs is pretty cool. We stayed in Old Faithful Inn our last night there. It is overrated & overpriced, no radio, no tv, no air, has heat though. I guess Old Faithful is worth seein once, but it dang sure ain't worth seein twice.

The elk won't be movin into the Elk refuge by Sept. or Oct., but they say about 3000-4000 elk winter there. GunBarrel restaurant in Jackson Hole is awesome, pricey, but awesome. Elk meat is the best meat I ever ate. Buffalo is good too. Drive across Teton Pass into Idaho, they ain't much there but there is Grand Teton Brewing Co. just inside Idaho where you can take a free tour & they have a pretty cool little bar there where we threw a few back.

We flew into Salt Lake City, caught another plane into Jackson Hole, absolutely beautiful flight into JH.

One of the best vacations I ever been on. I hope you have a GREAT time. \:\)

Oooooh in the 4 years of living in Bozeman, I spent a lot of time taking people to Yellowstone.

Yeah the Tetons' are AMAZING! You think you've seen beautiful scenery until you go there. Everyone has pretty much touched on the great places to see, but here's some advice on HOW to see it.

Don't stop for the first buffalo in the park...there will be 1,000's more you can take pictures of.

Take all your food with you. All the restaurants are the same and have the same crappy food. Seriously...it's like what you'd get at a school cafeteria or hospital.

The best time to plan your lunch is when you see Old Faithful. Of the 6 times I have been into the park, I have missed it by minutes EVERY time...so if you end up having to wait, eat your lunch. They have good ice cream there too :-)

Also, don't bother stopping at every gift shop, they're all the same and have the same stuff. The best place to buy Yellowstone souvenirs is in West Yellowstone (it's a town outside of the park).

The museum at the Lower Falls (I think that's where it is-it has employee bunkhouses around it too-Tower Falls area?!?!) is awesome. It's a full on building about how Yellowstone became what it is today.

Norris Geyser Basin is better than Mammoth Hot Springs. Everyone goes to Mammoth because it's close to the exit/entrance to the park, but save your walking for Norris. You'll see more there.

You're going to see a lot of elk and buffalo. If you don't see wolves, bears and other cool animals, don't sweat it...you're going when the weather is still a bit warm in MT. The best time to tour the park is in the winter IMO. BUT if you go to West Yellowstone, they have a wolf/bear exhibit next to the IMAX theater that's pretty cool. They have like 8 BIG bears that live there and a pack of wolves that were captured years ago (they're old, but still cool).

Oh and DON'T get into a hurry or you'll ruin the trip for yourself. And be ready to see a LOT of foreigners-mostly Asian...and they take pictures OF EVERY DARNED THING!!!!

If you plan on camping in the park, the best RV campground is near the fishing bridge (full hookups). I like the primitive camping at Mammoth/entrance the best. If you want to stay at a cool hotel/cabin thingy, I HIGHLY recommend you stay at Chico Hot Springs. It's cheap and nice (but there isn't any TV/radio's etc except for in the bar).

West entrance to Yellowstone. No one has mentioned about Hebron (sp) Lake and the earthquake. You can see the faultline from your car and there is a musem like place there explaining about the formation of Yellowstone. Earthquake Lake was formed when a side of the mountain slid down into the valley. You can still see the houses many feet underwater when the lake filled. Some of this may be not 100% accurate but it is well worth the visiting. Enjoy

Hebgen Lake is another goodie. It's gorgeous. If you're gonna camp there-Rainbow Point is where to be. The story of Earthquake Lake is humbling, too.
