Ruger,

I have observed the same thing when out and about. I was in the garden section of Home Depot the other day and noticed a man with a Glock on his hip. After giving him a quick look over from the side, I concluded he was almost surely a off duty cop or detective. Haircut, clean cut, polo shirt, full strength belt. When he turned, I noticed his badge on his belt.

I'd almost think that most people wouldn't even notice this guy has a gun or have any kind of negative reaction if they did notice. I have known of one or 2 people that are OC advocates and make it a point to dress in a professional manner since they are "carrying the flag" of the movement. Like others have stated, I support the concept of OC, but have no interest in crusading myself.

I've only carried openly a handful of times, and usually on the way home from work. I'm mostly dressed in khakis and a tucked in polo shirt, and if it's warm, I'll take my jacket off...thus open carry. I did it a few weeks ago, getting gas for my truck. No one said anything to me.

I think the open carry deal is also a safeguard against concealment. Here's the way I've heard it: say you are carrying your gun in a holster that is covered by a your shirt. You go to reach for something on the top shelf, and your gun is exposed. Under concealed carry only statutes, your gun is no longer exposed, and someone--citezen or cop--may call you out on it. However, under open carry, your exposed gun is legal.

Having said that, I personally would rather have it covered by a jacket or an un-tucked shirt. But I'm glad the open carry allows me the opportunity to carry open if I do so, like I did a few weeks ago at the gas station on the way home from work.

Try this...

Your eating at Luby's or Picadilly

Mad mad rushing in with an "assault" rifle and demands everyone get on the floor.

now first reaction would be wait till he is not looking, draw and take him down.

If your carrying Open and he sees that are you gonna be able to wait till he is not looking or will you be the first to get mowed down by his "assault "rifle.

Just a thought and a reason why I like to carry concealed

Open carry may indeed be an invitation to many thugs to "come and get you some"...

the thing is that under any circumstances, the thug knows his intent well before you do.

If you meet a guy in the street and he sees your gun out in the open , but his is hidden, then all he has to do (if he indeed wants to rob you or simply take your high dollar gun) is wait until you pass and shoot you in the back of the head....

You may indeed provoke him into this by parading through what he considers his turf while packing a gun in plain view. Many of these thugs are ticking time bombs and just waiting to be provoked.

the simple truth is that open carry will not only hip a thug to YOUR intent and possibly give them a bit more advantage, BUt, it may indeed provoke the most dangerous ones.

Criminals will not quit being criminals because the average citizens start packing, it'll just change the way they go about things.

A simple robbery will be a homicide because the criminal sees that you are carrying and thusly shoots you first and then goes through your pockets...

I'd much rather pray for a robbery to remain a robbery and later pick the guy out of a line up than to bury my wife or die myself trying to defend a few dollars and a credit card.....

Getting killed mainly because I got some false sense of security or macho-ism from strapping a gun on my hip, just seems like a waste of a life to me......

My life and the life of my wife is worth more than my ego or what I have in my pockets at the time.

Good luck to you all.....

thanks

I'll have to agree that seeing someone that appears to be an off duty officer or an on duty detective gives me a sense of security. I do not open carry. I just don't want to draw any attention to myself or my gun. I do make sure that my right hand is always free and the purse is always on my left shoulder.

There are a million scenarios.... Every scenario here can be countered the opposite.... Bad guy saw the gun & left you alone... Bad guy saw the gun and shot you first... guy with assault rifle saw you and shot you....

blaw blaw blaw.... Do what you want and that is fine.... however, the bigger issue is cops not knowing the law and acting the way so many of them have started.... I have had cops ask if I had a gun cause I had a buldge under my shirt (I do not carry open unless i am in the woods).... no big deal, say yes and do you want to see my permit.... No problem and not had one yet... now turn it 180... cop pulls a gun on me because he sees the outline of a gun under my shirt (he does not know if I am bad guy or legalally able to carry any more than if I am carrying open).... This is the same scenario that got all this started... it is all the reaction of the police office, not whether or not I am carrying open or concealed as this has nothing to do with it. both are legal and both could get either responce from a cop.

My instructor (a SWAT team veteran) preached to us about concealing your weapon and the element of surprise. His favorite line was "There is NO tactical advantage for carrying your weapon in plain view". I agree with him. Why put all your cards on the table? The only people I personally know that open carry have the "little man syndrome" or want you to think that they are billy bad #$% because they are carrying.
