It depends on what gun i carry my Springfield 45 is a little to bulky to conceal unless its winter time and a jacket. I LOVE GUNS. It excites me everytime i see somebody with a carry permit, because thats one less chance of getting the blasted things took away IMO. I have no problem with open carry and do so when i tote my Springfield but i prefer concealed.

Second what neighborhoods do ya'll live in that fell the need run around packing heat all the time. Killing someone is'nt as fun as the movies makes it out to be.
I feel safe where I live and only carry around 25% of the time... and alot of that time is when I am out walking for exercise.... and mostly due to some very aggressive dogs... if one ever latches on to me I want to be able to stop the attack....
however, when i worked in Atlanta and worked down town in the middle of the night, I carried much more frequently.
however, it to me is all still about freedom to do as we are legally able to do.

I CC ond OC, it does not matter which I am, I do not but the "element of Suprise" as many do, its just not so, how many articles have we seen about someone who was carrying openly being mowed down? Dunno, I have personally never read one. I carry openly when I do to encourage someone to ask, so that I can pass on and educate about our rights and what they are. I personally know of at least one robbery that did not happen at a waffle house down here in GA as two guys were sitting in a booth open carry and the thugs did not want anything to do with it. They went down the street and got butsed trying to hold up another place and the story came out. Is there an element of suprise, almost assuradly, but in most states in the south the bad guy knows just about anyone can and may be carrying, so they tend to shoot first if they are going to anyway. Be aware of your surroundings, keep a head on a swivel and protect yourself, you are the only one out there who will. But I do generally wear clean and neat clothes.

I live in Midtown Memphis, less than 4 blocks from the 11th most dangerous street in the US. I've come to like living in Memphis and specifically like living in Midtown. Once you figure the city out, you can reasonably avoid almost all of the crime.
But even living in rural areas, times when I would be glad that I armed would be broken down o the side of the road, walking across a WalMart parking lot. How about returning to your vehicle parked in a secluded WMA parking lot well after dark?
I've been carrying daily for 6+ years. I'd say there have been numerous circumstances where I am glad that I was carrying and one circumstances in particular, while getting into my vehicle in Savannah GA, where I actually put my hand on my sidearm. Thankfully, it did not escalate beyond that, but it sure had the potential to. You never know what kind of situation you could find yourself in. I look at carrying a sidearm more like wearing a seatbelt or keeping a fire extinguisher in the kitchen: I haven't had a wreck in years and never had a home fire, but there is no substitute for either when you need them.

I don't like open carry - because it takes away the element of suprise - which, can and will, save you life someday ferg....
Not entirely true in a state that is known for concealed carry, but yes it may...

Open carry may indeed be an invitation to many thugs to "come and get you some"...
the thing is that under any circumstances, the thug knows his intent well before you do.
If you meet a guy in the street and he sees your gun out in the open , but his is hidden, then all he has to do (if he indeed wants to rob you or simply take your high dollar gun) is wait until you pass and shoot you in the back of the head....
You may indeed provoke him into this by parading through what he considers his turf while packing a gun in plain view. Many of these thugs are ticking time bombs and just waiting to be provoked.
the simple truth is that open carry will not only hip a thug to YOUR intent and possibly give them a bit more advantage, BUt, it may indeed provoke the most dangerous ones.
Criminals will not quit being criminals because the average citizens start packing, it'll just change the way they go about things.
A simple robbery will be a homicide because the criminal sees that you are carrying and thusly shoots you first and then goes through your pockets...
I'd much rather pray for a robbery to remain a robbery and later pick the guy out of a line up than to bury my wife or die myself trying to defend a few dollars and a credit card.....
Getting killed mainly because I got some false sense of security or macho-ism from strapping a gun on my hip, just seems like a waste of a life to me......
My life and the life of my wife is worth more than my ego or what I have in my pockets at the time.
Good luck to you all.....
thanks
Its not about ego, but then if you dont carry a gun or believe in protecting yourself you will never get it or understand it.
Thieves and thugs are basically lazy, they do not want to expend the energy to go after a known armed target in most instances...proven fact. Granted there are places you would not carry openly..I personaly do not go there...I have no reason to, there are places in Atlanta the APD wont go! Go ahead and call 911, wait for the LEO to get there..oh wait u died at 9...or just do nothing, you got shot because you only had 5 bucks or you saw his face. The agrument is age old. I for one will be the egotistical, maniacal, warmonger at the OK Corall you think all gun carriers must be. I am trained, I know my limitations and do not pretend they are not there. I know my equipment and I WILL NOT BE A VICTIM for some thug with a gun, if you want to, have fun, that just is not how I roll.

Wildcat,
Lamar Ave. According to 2010 FBI statistics. I know those statistics can be spun numerous ways and the numbers can be based on data that doesn't reflect reality. I saw it in Forbes magazine.
I do drive that road almost everytime I go hunting. If I get caught at the red light of Lamar and Airways at 3:300 in the morning, it is almost guaranteed that at least one person will approach my vehicle and kock on the window wanting something.
I've also had numerous vehicles roll up next to me at redlights and try to get my attention. I'm not complaining about it, in fact I'm used to it, but I certainly feel justified in carrying a weapon, especially when I make the stupid mistake of needing gas on my way to hunt. You want to be glad you have a sidearm? try stopping at a gas station on Lamar ave in the pre hunting hours of the morning. Stray dogs and crackheads abound.
