First of all I will express my own personal opinion on carrying a weapon.
1) I don't believe we should have to pay money to get a piece of paper that says we can do what is legal for us to do to begin with by the constitution of the United States. 2) I believe we should be able to carry what we want, where we want and how we want. 3) I would, however, be in favor of a mandatory background check.
Now, I personally would not open carry. The reason is because of the general publics (and police) views and fears and ignorance of guns. However, after reading the thread about the dude that got into a tight spot for open carry I was thinking.
How many times have you been in a store and saw a clean cut man in a t-shirt, jeans and carrying a Glock on his side in plain view. Perhaps the t-shirt said something like FBI or TBI or Drug Task Force.
How many times did you see him, glace his way after seeing the gun then instantly relax and go on your business as you knew he was an off duty police officer just chillin and doing his chores on his day off ?
Amazing what a tucked in t-shirt and a hair cut will do huh?
Of course, I could be the only one though. Dunno.

I don't open carry often. I don't have anything against those that do, though.

I agree with 1, 2, and 3. Good post.
I don't think I'd open carry, but if someone wants to that's their own business.

perception is a persons initial reality and what we work on in public situations 99% of the time. Long hair, baggy clothes, tatoos, pierecings, all these things will get you judged and people will make assuptions about you.
Same can be said for short hair, tucked in shirt, suits, and car you drive...its not right but it is how we imediately size people up.
I don't open carry for the reasons ferg listed.

I've only been around 3 guys who were carrying open and they wanted everyone around them to know they had a gun. I'm not against it but it's just not for me and I couldn't imagine going into a busy mall on the weekend with my gun in plain sight. Too many uneducated people out there to open carry IMO. I still think you are the 1st target when open carrying or they see your gun as another free gun for them.

It's all in ones perception. 1st target or good reason to move on? I've never had a problem with open carry.

Our instructor (police chief) told us that if we choose to carry open, we would forfeit the element of surprise in any situation/confrontation.
