normal opening day, Saturday before Thanksgiving-jan. 1
wild hogs are now non-protected
legalize .410 for turkey
--------------------------- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TWRC ESTABLISHES 2011-12 HUNTING SEASONS
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission has approved the 2011-12 hunting seasons during its May meeting which concluded Friday (May 20) at the Ray Bell Region II Office Building. The commission had received a preview of the hunting seasons’ proposals from Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officials during its April meeting. Chief Daryl Ratajczak and other members of the Wildlife and Forestry Division staff made presentations at the May meeting as well.
A major change includes a continuous deer gun hunting season which will run from the traditional starting date of the Saturday before Thanksgiving through Jan. 1. The second deer young sportsman hunt will be held the Saturday-Sunday following the Jan. 1 season-ending date.
Another major change is wild hogs are no longer considered a big game animal. Wild hogs are now classified in the nonprotected wildlife proclamation. Landowners would be given the ability to kill wild hogs by means not previously allowed. This includes all legal weapons and live trapping with bait outside of big game seasons. Wild hogs can only be taken at select Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) during other scheduled hunts.
Quail and rabbit season will now start the first Saturday of November which in 2011 is Nov. 5. Quail season will now end on Jan. 31 in an effort to conserve the quail population. Rabbit season will have its traditional season-ending date with most other small game the last day in February, which in 2012 is Feb. 29.
The TWRA had proposed to keep the hunting regulations intact for the next two years. However, the commission during its committee meeting elected to make the regulations valid for the coming seasons only and will re-evaluate the proposals next spring. WMA quota permits will be reduced from a $20 refundable fee to a $10 non-refundable fee.
The fall turkey season has been moved from December to October and the number of days has been increased from 12 to 14. A young sportsman bear hunt has been established for the bear counties. It will be held the same weekend as the young sportsman deer hunt in the fall. The hunt will allow a young sportsman to harvest one bear.
A summary of the major proclamations for 2011-12: *Proclamation 11-03 Proclaims Enterprise South Park WMA Changes the name of Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant to Enterprise South Park.
*Proclamation 11-04 Statewide Big Game Hunting Seasons Deer - Create continuous gun season running from the first Saturday before Thanksgiving to Jan. 1 Deer - Increase antlerless opportunities in Benton, Hamilton, Hardin, Monroe, Marion, Perry, Sevier, and Union counties. WMA quota permits will be reduced from a $20 refundable fee to a $10 non-refundable fee.
I wonder if this means it will now cost $10 bucks to put in for hunts or if you don't draw, you only get half your money back?
Which means if you draw it costs you $20 and if you don't it costs you $10.
Which means it cost everyone who puts in and will generate more revenue for TWRA.

Sounds to me like it means it costs everyone 10 bucks and no one gets their 10 bucks back, successful or not. All about the benjamins there, that will really add up.
Glad to see the commission stopped the 2 year change deal, if they even exist in 2 years.

X2!!!!! There are too many problems with all of this change. To begin with, whether the upper heads within the TWRA wants to acknowledge this or, not-I know several game wardens and they are very concerned with the fact that deer WILL BE shot across the state by "turkey" hunters during the fall season with shotguns. Plus all of the blasting, by every firearm will reduce hunter opportunity as the older deer are pushed nocturnal alot earlier than normal and that will leave younger deer to get shot. Not to mention that I don't like the fact that the TWRA is assuming that the majority of Tennessee hunters aren't intelligent enough to read a calender--alot of us are as, if not more, educated asfun they are! What they should have done is to modify the gun opening/closing of the SW Tennessee counties, as it was they that complained enough to get it changed so they could hunt their rut in December with a gun! Finally, we are losing 8-12 days of hunting days and that is what really has me upset!!!!

Now deer will be hunted with a firearm for 8 weeks straight. That is ridiculous. I am glad it closes jan 1st. That will help get the deer hunters off farms I. Coyote hunt earlier. I wish they would leave a 2 week no hunting gap in mid december and close it jan 1.it will definitely help small game hunters and that is a plus.

It is the same number of days of the fall shotgun turkey hunt during an archery only deer season as it was in 2009,2010, etc. It hasn't been a problem to this point, so it is hard to see why it is a problem now.

I dont get on here much anymore and probably catch some flack for my comment but here goes. I for 1 am glad for the change . I am in west TN and to pay 1600 plus to hunt and have to bowhunt only during the time the rut is taking place kinda singed my feathers a bit . I love bowhunting but having the size restrictions in place during the rut adds up to about 1% chance of a still shot.
I will go take my Geritol now

No desire to re-hash an old debate, but hardly anyone hunted the turkey season in December. However, the are many on here that said that they will hunt it now that it has moved up and even BGG admitted that the TWRA expects an increase in fall turkey hunters due to the move up in dates that is all I'm saying and what my friends that are GW are concerned about—more opportunity to accidentally mistake a deer for a turkey. They mentioned this to the powers-at-be they said, but obviously it didn't change the outcome. I hope they and myself are wrong—but I have no reason to believe differently.

Simplicity......I'd rather have it this way than swapping back and forth from week to week.
not my ideal way but okay with me....
