A 'stowed' PFD is of NO use in a Kayak - might as well not take it -

i used to whitewater kayak alot. doesn't do you any good if you ain't wearing it.

Make sure you have one that doesn't fit snug up under your arms... all the paddling you will rub yourself raw.

Other than below dams, there is no requirement to wear lifejackets.
Not a kayaker, but why would you think about not wearing one when you are underway?
There are no rules about wearing one when in a boat doing anything, except for the dam thing and having one.
Common sense should be your guide without looking for the government or TWRA to tell you how not to drown.
I'd probably wear a helmet too, if I was you.

I only extreme white water and always wore mine. I would atleast keep it with in reach if in flat water. But if you are in moving water please wear it.
