i think Boswell Landing, Ginger Bay, Rushing Creek and Gatlin Point all have primitive camping available. all are right on the water. Gatlin Point is on Barkley and the other 3 are on Kentucky Lake. They are all inside LBL.
Neville Bay is another on Barkley Lake.

Just one thing, you are correct you can camp anywhere BUT if you camp outside of a designated camping area ie: Boswell etc. you must have a back country camping permit. These can be purchased at Piney or the welcome center, or any license agent.
Hope you have a great time.

I like Gatlin Point, it has about 20 campsites. And it's got a levied impoundment lake you can fish from or you can get right on on Barkely with a ramp there too. All within 1/4mile of the campsite.
only thing is, come bout Memorial Day, that place is redneck city with poodles barking and random firecrackers going off.
any other weekend outside of that, you might be the only one in the whole campground.
Neville Bay is nice too.
I just would add, even though I like the Barkley side. It seems to be more fishy-stinky smelling and have more mosquitoes. The Kentucky Lake side is more breezy, less mosquitoes, BUT more people. I'd rather deal with mosquitoes than people. Seems like on the KenLake side, there is always some douche in a z-71 having to go to mcdonalds 9 times from the camping area constantly stirring up dust.
