I went with the Brazilian cherry finish that Sam's carries. It has the padding attached and it turned out great. Holds up to the dog well and looks good. My only complaint is it is a little loud.

Its not hard to put down. Get a decent flooring though, since dogs will be on it. Like several have said. Start square, get knee pads and a miter saw comes in handy for good square cuts. Leave a bit of a gap for expansion. And finish off with quarter round molding to match the existing base mold.

In door ways you can nail down a 2x4 so you can have a good line eye balling does not work very good.

Sorry so late getting back to you. I was down at the Redneck Reviera for a few days with no PC. If your talking about using a board to use as a straight edge between walls in a large opening. I would think it would work fine.
