I had a Land Use professor that was big on the Atchafalaya basin. It was his pet area of study.
it's a little foggy, but I think I recall him saying it was the ancient basin-channel of the Mississippi. And that a giant log,silt and debris jam eons ago had shifted the channel over towards it's path now.

Ditto and the crawfish festival at Krotz Springs/Breaux Bridge is the epidome of decadent. Wish I still drank. I'd go this year.
Atchafalya is an Indian word that means, "only Cajuns allowed after 8-pm.
