18 Valedictorians is ridiculous. Society just keeps feeding the "everyone wins" and entitlement attitude and these new generatons of kids go into the world thinking they are always going to be patted on the head.......

unless all have the exact same gpa, which i seriously doubt, i agree.

around here, the valedictorian is usually some in-house political thing with the school.
at our local high school, the one I went to-the V was usually some educator's kid at that school.
At the awards ceremony last week. My son (a junior) is graduating with the senior class, and he got a couple of awards. Anyway, the valedictorian DID NOT receive a single award or scholarship or 'goody pin'
He simply got his cheesy olympic looking neck medallion. His mom is a teacher there. Same as it was when I graduated. Except our Valedictorian was also gay too. So he got extra points for that as well I suppose.

I have never heard of a school having 2 Valedictorians let alone 18! It totaly takes away from the value of the title and makes it pointless for a student to do there best.

May as well make every student a "valedictorian". When I graduated in '79, we only had one, and she had the highest grades. Thought that was just how it worked.
Also called the student with the second-highest grades the salutatorian. Other than those two, it was just "here's your diploma, don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out."

It's getting that way in every aspect of life , just go to the ballpark at awards day . When I played little league the only trophys given out were to the champs of league play and to the all - stars . Nowaday if you just play you get a trophy . Kids need to understand awards for achievments not just participating ! Also when I played you went to try out and if you didn't make the team you didn't get to play and thats it . No incentives to excell to most kids !!

No child left behind means no child gets ahead either. Same thing they're trying to do with the government as a whole... take away the American Dream and make everyone equal.
In fact, my child should feel bad about himself for being the only kid in the class to get a 100% on his spelling test this week. He should think about what the other kids must have to deal with at home and all the obstacles that they have to overcome every day. Maybe I should have him miss a question or two on his next test so he doesn't ruin the other kids' self-esteem.

I thought it wsa ridiculous, but we had like 4 or 5 at my graduation in 01'. Each of them did in fact have a 4.0 gpa, but I think when it comes to that there should be some kind of test to decide which ONE gets to make the speach. Good greef!
BTW One of them was a rally good friend of mine who is now only a couple semesters away from earning his doctorate at UT. He would have already got it, but he went into the Guard after his first year or so and got called to duty a time or two and that set him back.
