an animal shelter kills dogs/cats if they are out of room or low on funds

personally I would not want the job but I do not loose any sleep over the issue

If I could snap my fingers and give them all good homes I'd do it. I don't spend my days worrying about it but I'm not thrilled with the thought either. Not the shelter's fault though. They do what they can with what they have.

unfortunately the animals suffer because of irresponsible pet owners.some people have valid reasons for taking pets to the shelters but most are just piss poor owners.it bothers me that they have to be put down to make room but hard choices have to be made sometimes.

the "blue haired people" in Memfrica are crying about the animals at the shelter there being put down, maybe they need to dip into their pockets deeper or take some of the animals home

guarantee you the ones griping are ones who never offer to house the animals and have never sent a penny to the shelter to help them out.

It doesn't bother me one bit.In the county I grew up in there wasn't a shelter and poeple had a bad habit of dropping dogs off on the sides of the road I lived on and our driveway.I've seen alot and I mean alot of stray dogs that was so pittiful looking from starving to death. We had alot come out to our house at the end of a long gravel drive and we would always put them down.Pour things would be ate up with mange and ticks, almost felt good for putting them out of their missery. I don't like to kill living things just to kill it,thats not the way I was raised, but if you can't feed an animal or give it to someone who can feed it,then putting them down is the only logical thing to do.

My dad told me that when he was a kid in a coal camp he knew people who would put kittens in a sack with rocks and throw em in the river to get rid of them. He said they couldn't afford ammo to shoot em and didn't have animal shelters and weren't able to get them fixed. Sounds pretty rough to me, but I guess they didn't want them to get overpopulated...

As an ex animal control officer who spent some time "behind the scenes" at an animal shelter, it bothers me a little. The shelter had a special room where all euthanasia was done. One the door, they had a huge sign that read "all dogs go to heaven". What bothered me the most was when I would see a dog that I knew was a sweet dog and would've made someone a great pet enter the room....or puppies.

I will say this. I grew up in the country and know the power of a well placed bullet for humane euthanasia, but the stuff they gave those dogs was so fast it was unreal. Painless and very, very fast. Until you see it first hand, its hard to comprehend a liquid can do that.

The biggest problem I have with it, is those shelters that claim to be "no kill". In all honesty, very few are.

I've lived in the country where dogs were dropped off, & had to put a few down that were in horrible shape.

It's not something I like & it does bother me, but I would not blame the shelter - unless they were a PETA type shelter that just sucks money from the gullible & kills virtually all the dogs they get.

As long as irresponsible people permit pets to propagate when they have no intention of taking care of the animals shelters will need to put them down.
Kittens in a sack with a rock then tossed in the water was happening when I was a kid and not in coal mining country.

Dropping animals off to let em starve is just cruel.

Im sort of known as your go to guy when you have pet or farm animal you need shot, bullet cheaper than a shot at the vet. Shot a horse just the other day. I dont enjoy it or anything, but people know I will and not lose sleep over it. We have no animal shelter either, take care of it ourselves.

It's sad, but has to be done sometimes. I remember having to put down a couple family pets when I was a kid because my folks didn't have the money to take them to the vet. That really sucks!

Does it bother me, yes, but not as much as the reason for the problem to begin with, (irresponsible people causing these excess animals).

When I was younger and didn't understand, it bothered me...but now I am just glad they have a humane way of disposing of these animals. If I could, I would give them all a home too...but that just isn't going to happen.

But I tell you what does make me mad-Due to PETA and other animal rights groups screaming to the government about rendering plants, legislation has made it illegal.

I know you know of someone who isn't taking care of their horses as they should because they can't afford to (or they're just careless pieces of sh*t). Anyways- this problem became CRYSTAL CLEAR to me at auction this last weekend. I have never seen so many sorry looking animals as I did on Saturday. At first I was so mad...like "these people should be ashamed of themselves..." Then it hit me... I honestly believe that if we rendered large animals like we did in the past, we wouldn't have as many people waiting to last minute to sell them...they do because they can't afford them. And you can't even GIVE AWAY a horse right now...

It's sad.

End rant :-)

You know what is sad, I had a horse a couple years back that came down with colic, the trainer had work with her for over 3 hours by means of medication and walking her around. I got there to take over and I was ready to put her down because a vet could not show up until later that evening. I was told that I could not because I might get in trouble. What the hell, I had to set there for 5 hours watch my horse in pain and suffering and could do nothing for her. She died on the ground with her head in my lap, I felt like a POS because I could not help her and she was made to suffer until her last breath.

Gov't needs to stay out of what is right.

What really happens, is by the time they spend 20,000 on a trailer and 50,000 on a truck to pull the trailer, there all tapped out and the horses pay the price. But hey, at least they look good hauling their 25.00 horses.

Encore-That is super sad and I have been in your shoes before. But for someone to say you'd get into trouble for putting your horse down, is bull-honky. As much as we love our pets, they are personal property and you can do whatever you please with them-especially when it comes to them being sick. I'm not berating you for not putting them down (please don't take it that way), but in the future you'll know what to do and to heck with the naysayers. But I've also had the feeling of false hope---

I had a horse go down last year with a liver infection that led to photo-sensitization and then to liver failure-A trip to UT, a dead horse and $4k later, I wish I would have just put him out of his misery...but hindsight is 20/20 right? :-(

Rukid-yeah that happens too... But I don't see that very often...most people that have those huge trailers and trucks have thousands of dollars worth of pony, crapping in the trailer LOL

The reddish brown dog on the couch was found alone along a highway when it was still small enough to hold in one hand. It was obvious that someone put the dog out there. I have no doubt that he would have died there if no one took him in. His name is Scooby.

The black dog is from the shelter. It roamed around for weeks at the Methodist Church here in town until the pound came and got it. She is a sweet dog and loves everyone. Her name is Scrunchies.

The blonde dog was given to me because the owners dog had puppies that they did not want. Irresponsible dog breeding, no doubt. her name is Ginnie.

None of my dogs are pure breeds, none will ever win ribbons or medals that I can brag about. I don't need an animal to boost my self-esteem. But, they are all loving dogs that seem to get along with most anyone and any dog they come in contact with. They don't like people or dogs outside the fence but once they get inside they seem to get along just fine.

The sad thing is that many people claim to be dog lovers when in fact they should be classified as a dog owner. There is a difference.

I wonder how many have given dogs away that didn't live up to the expectations of the owner? Many more than would admit it, I would say.

If more people were dog lovers and not just dog owners, then we probably wouldn't have such a huge problem with overcrowding of these type shelters.

Some people just don't care.

Try to find a no kill shelter. But some animals die prematurely due to irresponsible owners.
