Public Safety Reminder! Use Caution while Towing!

Just thought Id throw this out as a reminder to everyone who tows a trailer regularly or maybe just occassionally.
Friday night my Dad was coming home with this Tractor and bushhog on a 16ft utility trailer. He had turned off the highway, and onto a side road, where we was traveling about 35mph, he said he felt the trailer sway and a sudden jerk, and he looked back and the trailer had come off the 2" ball he tried to slow it down, but it shot toward the ditch and broke one of the safety chains and the trailer passed him and went throught a churches yard and smacked a huge oak.
We tow this trailer weekly and it was in great shape, so it can happen to anyone. This happened to a Dodge 3500, with 2 safety chains, a locking pin through the locking mech. of the trailer. We couldnt find the pin that was locking the trailer to the ball, so I guess it lost out or broke, and one safety chain broke and the other came unhooked. Just be safe out there guys and always use caution!! Oh btw, the tractor didnt have one scratch on it and it was still secured on the trailer with the chains and ratchet binders.

Dang. Glad no one was hurt..... might want to check to see that the coupler was adjusted properly to the ball.... sounds like the load weight was enough on the back half of the trailer to pop it up off the ball.

Lucky. Say a guy that trailer came unhitched and went through his car into his leg and just about amputated it!

Tractor was fine, not a scratch on it. We always haul it on that trailer the same way as it was on there Friday night, so we arent really sure what happened. The coupler on that trailer has never been my favorite as sometimes it is a pain to make sure it is latched but if you can get the keeper pin in, it is locked. You just never know what might happen.

I lost a boat and trailer on the Memphis 240/I40 interchange one time. When I finally got bac to the trailer, it had a 3 inch scratch on the fender where it hit the guard rail. It was sitting on the right side emergency strip of the highway just like I had parked it there.

That was amazing no one got hit on the interstate!! You were very lucky!!
We have had them come aloose before, but luckily the safety chains held on all those occasions. My favorite one was the time I was pullling a 20 ton pintle hitch behind a dumptruck and the pintle broke and I had a backhoe on it. It darted left and right but the chains held it. The only damage was in my underpants!!
