If you are only going for a couple of days you are almost wasting your time. There is to much to see in any of the Smithsonians. Arlington is a MUST. You can spend a day there wandering around and taking it all in. Its a powerful place.

The two museums that would be must sees are the Museum of Natural History and the Air & Space Museum.

If you are gonna ride a subway then be prepared to be around a huge crowd of people. Its best to go in after all the people who commute in to work are gone. Then leave town after they have all gone home. I'm wanting to say that 550,000-600,000 commute into DC every day for work. Traffic is incredible.

No trip to DC (nowadays) is incomplete without walking over to the White House and waving one finger in the air. Just sayin...

Thanks upsman but we only have 2 days to spend there. We will be back soon to spend a longer time but this is just a quick trip. We past by it awhile back on a job and didn't get to stop so I figured I would go back for a peak.

Aaron, several years ago we went to D.C. and found it was cheaper to fly SW into Baltimore and then take the Amtrak to D.C., and the hotel was a Holiday Inn about 2 blocks from Union Station and two blocks to the Captial and the mall. There is a shuttle that runs from Baltimore International to the Amtrak station. Everything in D.C. is free—for the most part. You will not need a car, just take the Metro to where you want to go if it's not around the mall (the Pentagon, or Arlington National Cemetary) and buy a pass that will be good for your entire stay. Call the Arlington info line and found out what time the guards give there daily information sessions—that is really informative and very cool because they answer any question you can come up with about their duty and job! Also, if you contact your State Representative now you should be able to arrange a behind the scene tour of the Capital building by the Representative themselves, or a staff member and once again that is free and is a must do for any D.C. trip! If you have any other questions send me a PM or contact me through FB.

Andy

edit note: just saw your above post--oh, well hope some of that helps anyway. let me know anyway if I can help further!

As for security in DC, the mall area (where the monuments and museums are) is very safe; venturing into unknown neighborhoods, on the other hand, can be a bad move.

One more thing: no trip to DC is complete without a night-time drive or stroll to see the monuments lit up after dark. This includes the USMC memorial across the river; it is awesome at night, and you can get some great pics of DC from that location.

X2 on the night-time stroll—all of the monuments, especially the Marine, Korean and Vietnam, memorials really come alive at night and are breathtaking—as all of it is.

From what little investigation I've done in the past, I would say to stay somewhere in VA and walk in or ride the train. When I was 10, my family took a trip up the east coast, and we walked EVERYWHERE. The train and subway system in DC is pretty good, so you shouldn't have any reason to pay $200/night in a DC hotel.

Here's another thought.....call your Congressman's office. They can arrange a tour of the Capitol, and since most of the staffers who answer the phone are low-budget 20-somethings, they might have some good insight as to cheap places to stay that are still convenient.
