I'm thinking about buying a welding unit to do some small welding tasks at home. The reason for buying is mainly to do my own trap modifications for foothold traps, and welding washers to .5" rebar to make stakes, etc.

I have no welding experience, but my father in law knows enough to keep me on track. I want something reliable and not too difficult to use.

Any suggestions on make and model?

A small mig wire machine would probly work your you....I'd get one with a gas selinoid that you can use a small inert gas cylider with instead of just a straight flux core wire...
There is not that much differance in them when your talking about the smaller wire machines. I would try to go with 220 over a 100 volt tho...
With a little practice you will get the hang of it good enough to do what you want to do....
most washers are zinc coated...they usually will not want to weld very well unless you crank up the heat...Don't be breathing the smoke from them.....

Miller or Lincoln brands are good.....

Stick welding can be a pain if you don't keep the rods dry. A tip is to keep them wrapped in old newspapers and in a tube or storage box of some type.... or place them in the oven for 30 minutes or so on low heat to dry them out if they are showing signs of moisture when welding with them.

A mig welder would be the easiest to learn on..... uses wire and inert gas.

Excellent advice. Also do yourself a favor: Spend a little extra and buy a Miller. Their small machines are head and shoulders above the rest in my experience.

Thanks for the advice. Looking around here are a couple that I have found....is the quality difference enough to make up for the price difference based on the smaller jobs I'd be doing?

Probably not, the Lincoln or Hobart in your links are good machines too. I would not be enticed by the dirt cheap off brads though.

I've got a Hobart Handler 135 that I got from TSC and it's done everything I need for the past 5 years. I really like it.

I had a smaller Lincoln from Home Depot before and it was a piece of junk. I'm not bashing Lincoln as a company because I know they make some fine machines, but the little flux core I got from HD never worked that great and nobody would sell me any kind of parts for it when the drive wheel went out. HD doesn't carry the parts, and the welding shops that carry heavy duty Lincolns don't carry parts for the dinky HD machines and Lincoln refused to sell me the part over the phone, said I had to get it from an authorized Lincoln dealer. Actually it looks a lot like the one in your link except it's flux core only, no gas. You're welcome to the one I have for free if you want it. It's in the back of my shed somewhere. Weld Pak HD: http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stor...locStoreNum=703

The smaller Hobart 140 would do everything you described just fine and save a little over the other Hobart. I think that's the model that replaced my 135. Good machine.

Get a MIG welder.. try to get a 220volt unit that can handle .035-.045 wire.

I like the small Miller welders, but they are pricey. If your not going to be using the welder for much more than small hobby type work. You could look into FarmHand welders from TSC. They are decent for the money. They are flux wire welders.

Whatever you decide,.. invest in a good auto shade welding helmet. They are worth every penny.
